Ginza Tsutaya Bookstore (GINZASIX 6F, Chuo-ku, Tokyo) will be held from Saturday, October 29, 2022 to Friday, November 11, 2022 by Ikko Narahara, a photographer who pioneered postwar Japanese photographic expression. In commemoration of the publication of the reissued edition of the representative photo book “Europe / Where Time Has Stopped”, we will display and sell vintage prints signed by Ikko Narahara in the store showcase. At the same time, in the photo collection corner, we will also exhibit and sell new edition collections and vintage collections.

Overview
The legendary photographer Ikko Narahara (1938-2020) pioneered new photographic expressions in post-war Japan while questioning the conditions under which humans live. He deepened exchanges with artists such as Masuo Ikeda and On Kawara, as well as poet and art critic Shuzo Takiguchi, and his first solo exhibition, Human Land, held in 1956, and Kingdom, held in 1958, received a great response. I called. These works, born from a technique that he himself called “personal documents,” have been highly acclaimed as novel and unique
masterpieces of documentary photography.
The first photo book published in 1967, “Europe: Still Time” (Kajima Institute Publishing Co., Ltd. edition), is a photograph of Narahara, who visited Europe for the first time in 1962 and stayed there for about three years. It is a representative work that captures not only Europe as a real existence, but also as a landscape in the minds of Japanese people from a unique perspective. is engraved.
This time, one of the legendary books will be published as a long-awaited new edition from Fukkan.com as “Europe / Where Time Has Stopped”. In commemoration of the publication of this book, at Ginza Tsutaya Bookstore, we will exhibit and sell rare signed vintage prints that were completed as works of art under the supervision of Ikko Narahara himself. We will also sell a new edition photo book and a rare vintage work book.
After 55 years, Ikko Narahara has revived in a new form. Please enjoy the publication of the masterpiece and the vintage print of the legendary photo book.

With the cooperation of the Ikko Narahara Archives, the book has been re-edited as a new edition with a new page structure that makes use of the pagination of the time, and a book that is easy to open and easy to pick up as a photo book. I devised it so that you can fully enjoy the photographic expression and compositional power that can be called artistic. At the end of the book, there is also a commentary on the work by Rei Masuda, a senior researcher at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. The book design will be done by graphic designer Yuya Sano, following “Kingdom Domains”.

Narahara Ikko (IKKO NARAHARA)
Born in Fukuoka in 1931. 1959 Completed master’s course at Waseda University Graduate School (Department of Arts).
In 1956, when he was still in school, his first solo exhibition, “Human Land,” received a great response, and he began working as a photographer. In 1959, he formed the self-agency “VIVO” with Shomei Tomatsu, Eikoh Hosoe, and Kikuji Kawada (disbanded in 1961). After that, he moved between Paris (1962-1964) and New York (1970-1974). After returning to Japan in 1974, he traveled around the world and held numerous exhibitions. He has also published numerous photo books and has received international acclaim. Passed away on January 19, 2020.
Major awards include the Japan Photo Critics Association New Face Award (1958), Minister of Education Award for Art, Mainichi Art Award (1968), Photographic Society of Japan Annual Award (1986), Medal with Purple Ribbon (1996), Order of the Rising Sun (2006) )Such.
