・This seminar includes the same lecture content as the seminar held in August 2022, “The World of Attention in the ‘API Economy’, API Security Risks That Can’t Be Done Without Knowing”. We will hold additional events due to many requests.
■ Rapidly expanding “API economy” from IoT/big data to virtual currency and metaverse
It has been a long time since the spread of IoT and the use of AI technology and big data has been called out, and many applications called “○○ Tech” such as finance, mobile, commercial transactions, and logistics are appearing for the development of digital services and businesses.
In such application development, by publishing and utilizing “API”, which is a contract for calling software functions from the outside, it is a commercial zone (economic zone) created by connecting existing services and data and expanding the business of one’s own company and other companies. An “API economy” is being built.
APIs are closely related not only to conventional systems, but also to “crypto assets (virtual currencies)” and “metaverse,” which have been attracting attention recently, so there is no doubt that the API economy will continue to expand rapidly in the future.
■ 300% growth in API traffic, creeping cyber attackers
The amount of API traffic traversing the network is also growing rapidly. Cloudflare is API-related with 55% of its traffic, growing at more than twice the rate of web traffic.
On the other hand, since APIs are gateways to systems, applications, and services, they are characterized by constant exposure to security threats.
In fact, many cyber attackers have launched attacks targeting API vulnerabilities. As a result, sophisticated cyberattacks can lead to the loss of personal and confidential information.
■ What security risks do APIs pose?
Attackers can also use API mechanisms to try to steal credentials or take down services. In addition, if there is some kind of
vulnerability, attackers can take advantage of the weaknesses and flaws to perform fraudulent actions, and damage can extend to multiple web services and applications that work with the targeted app. Gartner predicts that by 2022, API attacks will be the most common attack method against enterprise web applications.
As the API economy expands, in order to further promote business growth, it is necessary to understand the security risks of APIs and implement thorough countermeasures.
An easy-to-understand explanation of the optimal countermeasures against API security risks
In this seminar, we will explain security risks related to APIs and basic countermeasures. We will also introduce a solution that can prevent the risks listed in the “API Security Top 10” proposed by OWASP (Open Web Application Security Project).
