National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Tsushima Naka, Kita-ku, Okayama City; President: Hiroshi Makino) Okayama University Hospital (Main Hospital: Shikada-cho, Kita-ku, Okayama City; Director: Yoshinobu Maeda) Daisuke Toonishi, Center for Genome Medicine A research professor has been adopted by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) for the 2022 Next-Generation Cancer Medicine Acceleration Research Project. Based on the “Cancer Research 10-Year Strategy”, this project promotes research that approaches the biological elucidation of cancer, research based on cancer patient data such as cancer genome
information, and fusion research of these. By doing so, we aim to out-license to pharmaceutical companies at an early stage by accelerating research for practical application.
This time, Professor Tohnishi is in the project category “Research Area E (Cancer Diversity): Research on Innovative Cancer Treatment Methods Addressing the Heterogeneity of Cancer Cells.” Applied under the R&D theme of “development of new treatment methods to overcome spatial heterogeneity”. The number of applications was 38, which was a large number, but it was adopted, and I will lead the research team for the period from 2022 to 2026.
In response to this selection, Research Professor Tohnishi commented, “Through this research, we would like to elucidate the onset mechanism of malignant lymphoma and lead to the development of new treatments.” He showed interest in research activities for three years.

Daisuke Tohnishi Research Professor
Research Professor Daisuke Tohnishi is an outstanding researcher with the title of “Research Professor”, which is given to encourage associate professors with outstanding research achievements to act as independent PIs (Principal Investigators). Incentives such as allocation of research funds and enhancement of research activities are given. In addition, he is also a recipient of the Emergent Research Support Project*, a young researcher support project implemented by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), and is leading young researchers not only at Okayama University but also in Japan. I’m the only one who does. Please look forward to the future activities of the research team led by Professor Tohnishi.

In order to promote “emergent research” that aims to create seeds that lead to disruptive innovation through diversity and fusion, without setting specific issues or short-term goals, we aim to pursue free, challenging and integrated research that is not bound by existing frameworks. In principle, this project provides long-term support for a range of 7 years (up to 10 years with a stage gate review in between) while ensuring an environment where researchers can concentrate on their research.
