The Japan Assistance Dog Association (hereafter referred to as the Association) is engaged in training and dissemination of assistance dogs that support physically handicapped persons with limb
disabilities. A service dog picks up dropped objects, brings a mobile phone to secure a means of communication in case of an emergency such as a fall, and removes shoes and socks. As of April 2022, 58 dogs are active nationwide (as of April 2022), and along with guide dogs and hearing dogs, they serve as assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities, promoting the independence and social participation of people with disabilities. It costs about 2.5 million yen to train one service dog, about 90% of which is funded by donations.
