“LIMEX Pellet” (inflation molding grade), which uses limestone as the main raw material, is used for the exterior film of AST’s toilet paper and hand towels.
Packages that reduce the amount of petroleum-derived plastics used will be on sale from December 2022

Ast Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, President: Hiroyuki Hayashi, hereinafter Ast) is a toilet paper and hand towel exterior film, TBM Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Atsuyoshi Yamazaki, hereinafter) We adopted “LIMEX Pellet” (inflation molding grade), which uses limestone from TBM) as the main raw material. This is the first case of using LIMEX for the exterior of toilet paper and hand towels. From December 2022, it will be lined up at retail stores such as drug stores, home centers, and discount stores nationwide.
LIMEX exterior film can reduce the amount of petroleum-derived plastic used by approximately 40% compared to Ast’s conventional PE
(polyethylene) exterior film. We expect to be able to reduce effect gas emissions by approximately 15%*1.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the annual production of toilet paper is more than 1 million tons, which is equivalent to 700 million packs of standard 12 rolls of toilet paper. As a household paper*2 professional, Ast focuses on reducing the amount of plastic used in household paper packaging as an environmental contribution measure that is easy for general consumers to participate in. This time, we have evaluated the environmental performance of LIMEX and have adopted it for the industry’s first household paper packaging material.
*1 From LCA (calculation of environmental impact from procurement of raw materials to disposal) by TBM. May vary depending on manufacturing conditions. It is a reference value and not a guaranteed value. *2 Sanitary paper used in ordinary households. Toilet paper, tissue paper, towel paper, tissue paper, etc.

■ What is LIMEX?
LIMEX is an inorganic filler dispersed composite material that contains more than 50% of inorganic substances such as calcium carbonate*. As the main raw material is limestone, it can contribute to the conservation of resources that are at high risk of depletion, such as oil, water, and forest resources used to manufacture plastic and paper substitute products. The environmental performance is calculated using a method called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which scientifically analyzes the environmental impact of a product’s life cycle, from procurement of raw materials to production, distribution, use, and disposal. I am using it for development.
It has already been adopted by more than 8,000 companies and local governments, has acquired patents in more than 40 countries around the world, and has been introduced at international conferences such as the COP and G20. registered in the sustainable technology
dissemination platform “STePP” of the agency). *The JSA standard issued by the Japanese Standards Association defines it as an “inorganic-organic composite material (JSA-S1008) whose main component is an inorganic component.”
-About Limestone-
Limestone, which is the main raw material of LIMEX, exists abundantly on the earth, and it is a resource that can be self-sufficient even in Japan, which is a resource importing country. Therefore, compared to petroleum-derived plastics, which are subject to fluctuations in crude oil prices, it is possible to procure raw materials at stable prices and has a stable supply. Furthermore, compared to petroleum-derived plastics, limestone can reduce CO2 emissions at the raw material procurement stage to approximately 1/50, and can reduce CO2 emissions during incineration by approximately 58%.
-About recycling-
Since LIMEX can be recycled without separating the inorganic substance and thermoplastic resin, which are the main constituent materials, it has the same recycling potential as products designed with a single material. To date, we have collaborated with business operators, consumers, and local governments to implement many LIMEX material recycling initiatives that utilize existing recycling facilities. *Do not mix LIMEX Sheet products with used paper collection. If you dispose of it as business waste, treat it as industrial waste. When disposing as household waste, follow the rules of your local government.
