Samiro Yunoki & Alexander Kori Girard “East Meets West”
Mr. Samiro Yunoki, one of Japan’s leading dyers and artists, will turn 100 years old in October 2022 and is still active today. Over 70 years of creative activity has attracted attention across generations, and he has received a great deal of acclaim both at home and abroad as a leading expert in stencil dyeing in Japan. Mr. Yunoki created the Ace Hotel Kyoto logo, guest room art, lobby, and coffee shop curtains, all of which have an overwhelming presence as visual symbols of Ace Hotel Kyoto. This exhibition is a joint exhibition with Mr. Alexander Kori Girard, who designed the tiles and fabric panels for Mr. Maurice’s Italian, an American-style Italian Osteria on the 3rd floor of the building. Mr. Kori is the grandson of Mr. Alexander Girard, a representative mid-century architect and designer, and has inherited his grandfather’s DNA and has established a unique style that incorporates various colors and patterns.
The concept of the exhibition is “East Meets West.” Mr. Yunoki says that Alexander Girard’s craft museum, which he visited in Santa Fe, New Mexico, when he was in his 60s, was a turning point in his creation. That was the realization that I felt when I visited, “It’s okay to have more freedom!” Even now, more than 40 years later, the way he talks like it was yesterday tells us how important that moment was for him. Mr. Kori, on the other hand, grew up in Santa Fe and was fascinated by folk crafts from an early age through the International Folk Craft Museum near his home and the items sent from Japan. I visited Japan for the first time in 2006 and was greatly influenced by its culture, especially folk crafts. The two people, who have connected with each other in different places and have had a great influence on each other across generations, will be presenting the commune design art concept “East Meets” at the place called Ace Hotel Kyoto.
We will meet at West. Mr. Kori created a work for Mr. Yunoki’s work, as if communicating through art. The collaboration for each work has something in common with the concept of the hotel. In addition, among Mr. Yunoki’s works, there is art that has not been released to the world until now, and it will be a long-awaited opportunity for fans. During the special exhibition at the lobby gallery, Ace Hotel Kyoto will sell an accommodation plan that allows you to feel closer to the works of the two artists. In addition to viewing the room art, this is a special plan where you can stay while feeling the works of Mr. In addition, for guests who wish to stay from November 11th (Friday) to December 25th (Sunday), the theme of “living” and “life” being held at the museum “Eki” KYOTO We will present an invitation ticket to the exhibition “Samiro Yunoki life LIFE exhibition”. About Mr. Maurice’s Italian
An American-style Italian Osteria with a rooftop bar. Mr. Maurice’s Italian, supervised by Marc Vetri, a popular Italian chef from Philadelphia who was born into an Italian family who moved to the United States, offers a home-cooked menu called “Red Sauce Italian”. We offer a modernized taste using sophisticated ingredients and techniques while using it as a base.

While being global, we have created a dining space that has a strong folk impression.
