“Mihonoseki Lighthouse Night” was held to enjoy a fantastic lighthouse from the magic hour of the Sea of Japan

On October 8th (Sat) and 9th (Sun), the Sea and Japan Project in Shimane Executive Committee will collaborate with the Mihonosekicho branch of the Matsue Tourist Association and local companies to bring the sea and lighthouses of Mihonosekicho, Matsue City. An event called “Mihonoseki Lighthouse Night” was held to spread the charm of the area, and about 700 people visited in two days.
The Mihonoseki Lighthouse, which was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in February this year, is a historic lighthouse that was completed in 1899. The lighthouse, which stands quietly on the eastern edge of the Shimane peninsula, was lit up in a fantastical light that day, and was bustling with many visitors. At the venue, under the title of “Let’s spread the word on SNS! The charm of the sea of Mihonoseki!” We sent out Mihonoseki, which is full of charm.
On October 9th (Sunday), local singer-songwriters performed songs dedicated to Miho Shrine and songs related to the sea, and the inside of the Mihonoseki Lighthouse was open to the public. This event is part of the “Nippon Foundation ‘Sea and Japan Project'” that connects people through the sea in order to hand over the sea to the next generation.

A colorful lighthouse designated as an important cultural property! The lighthouse, which has been designated as an important cultural property of Japan, was enveloped in fantastic light. In the evening, the fantastic scenery spread out over the Sea of Japan, and while it was getting darker, the light-up started around 6:00 pm. The lights changed colors one after another, from blue to yellow to red, and the surrounding buildings and trees were also colorfully lit up, creating a magical atmosphere. The lighthouse, which is usually not popular at night, was crowded with families and couples who heard about the lighting up on TV and other media, and visitors with cameras who wanted to take pictures of the magical lighthouse.
Comments from visitors included, “I liked how the colors gradually became brighter and changed,” and “It was the first time I’d seen the lighthouse lit up, but it was very beautiful.”

Mihonoseki-cho, Matsue City is not only a lighthouse, but also a town full of the charm of the sea, such as the streets that prospered with Kitamae-bune, and Miho Shrine, which is worshiped as the god of fishing. At the venue, under the title of “Let’s send it on SNS! The charm of Mihonoseki’s sea!” did.
The next day, there was a live performance by local singer-songwriter YUMI, who performed songs dedicated to Miho Shrine and songs related to the sea. In addition, more than 200 people participated in the internal exhibition of the Mihonoseki Lighthouse, and toured the inside of the lighthouse, which is normally not open to the public. Isao Asakura of the Mihonoseki-cho branch of the Matsue Tourism Association, who planned the light-up, said, “We will continue to light up so that the Mihonoseki lighthouse will become the main attraction of tourism as a symbol of tourism as well as protecting the sea. I think it’s great,” he expressed his hopes for future tourism promotion.
