This time, the art project group WATOWA GALLERY will hold an exhibition by Haru Osawa at WATOWA GALLERY / THE BOX TOKYO (1-2-10 3F Imado, Taito-ku, Tokyo) from Sunday, October 30, 2022. I will hold a solo exhibition “ ⌘C + ⌘V ” (command CV).
“Command CV” is a shortcut key for copying and pasting images and text information on a PC.
“command C” means copy and “command V” means paste. Osawa expresses his own production style and process with this word, which is the title of this exhibition.
His creative process is unique. He uses a copy machine to copy his own drawings, or he copies the image created by dripping ink directly onto the copy machine, and then prints it by hand using the four colors of CMYK, which are the printing colors. Copy (paste). The background silver foil expresses the luminescence that occurs when copying with a copy machine.
Copying by a copy machine, and then copying through the body, is a two-step reproduction act. A “bug” such as a line may occur. Furthermore, because it is drawn with the body, it is an act of reproduction, but it becomes a one-time creative act that can never be exactly the same.
Speaking of reproduction, Walter Benjamin, in his book Artworks in the Age of Reproduction Technology, states that a work of art that can be reproduced is temporally and spatially unique, and that there is only one “now” and “here” in a work of art. ‘ disappears, but Osawa’s act of copying emphasizes the slight “bug” and “gap” that can only be caused by the act of copying, giving his work a temporal and spatial sense of oneness. , rather, it may be said that “aura” is generated by duplication.
Yes, Osawa’s work contains the paradox that it is a copy but not a copy. At the same time, it can also be seen as an antithesis that dared to counter mass production and mass consumption with the act of duplication. Through this exhibition, we would like to invite you to see Osawa’s unique “command CV”, which was born in an era in which any image can be easily reproduced by copy-and-paste “command CV”. ■ Hal Osawa

Born in Tokyo in 1997. Until now, he has produced works that have been drawn once, passed through a copy machine, and drawn on the printed matter. A copier that is a symbol of mass production. I have done the act of creating a bug myself here. From there, I dropped ink directly onto the exposed glass part of the copier to simultaneously “draw” and “print”. This made it possible to visualize the act of dragging itself, and integrated the body and the machine where they were separate.
The use of silver foil as a substrate makes the light a support, and the use of CMYK suggests the printing process of a copier.
