-Background and purpose of the association-
■ A correct understanding of self-harm is lacking in Japan ■ In recent years, there have been sporadic news reports about the suicides of well-known entertainers, and the reality is that suicide and self-harm are once again in the spotlight in society. In addition, self-harm itself, such as suicide attempts and wrist cutting, has come to be recognized again as a social problem.
When I hear the words “self-harm” and “wrist cut” in these contexts, I get the impression that these words have a depressing image. There may be more than a few people who interpret it as “purpose” or
“Kamatte-chan”. However, until now, little has been known about the correct recognition that “suicide” and “self-harm” are diametrically opposed in their purposes.
■Self-harm is not something that only special people do■
Is self-harm something that only a very special person does? A survey by Dr. Toshihiko Matsumoto (advisor of our association) of the National Center for Psychiatry and Neurological Medicine found that “approximately 10% of junior high and high school students have experienced self-harm at least once.” Furthermore, about 60% of those 10% of students said they had “experienced self-harm more than 10 times.”
In other words, there is a reality that more young people experience “self-harm” than people in the world think.
■ Self-harm is actually aimed at “survival” ■
So why does self-harm occur?
In response to this question, more than half of the middle and high school students cite “reduction of unpleasant feelings” as a reason. There is a background that “self-harm” is chosen as a way to overcome unbearable anger, anxiety and tension by yourself without anyone’s help. In other words, in most cases, self-harm is performed as a coping skill to survive, in order to manage the painful feelings that make you want to die. Suicide is intended to kill, self-harm is intended to survive.

■ To reduce the number of people who suffer from self-harm and those who misunderstand self-harm ■
Based on the above-mentioned facts, we should broadly enlighten society with correct knowledge about self-harm, including wrist cutting, and disseminate correct methods of involvement and treatment to eliminate misunderstandings and prejudices against self-harm. We have established this association with the aim of contributing to “construction of a society where no one suffers from self-harm”, including not only the person himself but also his family and people around him.
By reducing the number of people who have misunderstandings due to misunderstandings and prejudices, we can truly help those who choose self-harm as a means to “survive and continue to live a better life.” We would like to develop our activities as an organization that specifically contributes to “reducing the worries and suffering of the person himself and those who walk with him, and giving them the courage and hope to choose the next way of life based on correct understanding.” I’m here. Thank you for your support and cooperation with our association.
