– Promoting WX (Woman Transformation) in a male-dominated industry –
Kamiya Corporation Shonan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, President: Tadashige Kamiya), which manufactures and sells indoor doors “Full Height Door (R)” that reaches the height of the ceiling, has created a work environment that is easy for women to work in. We are also incorporating the voices of female employees in product development.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare’s “Labor Force Survey” (*1), the ratio of women working in the building materials industry is low at about 25% (average for all industries is about 45%), and it has always been a male-dominated industry. However, our company places importance on making it easier for women to work, and the ratio of female employees is 35.5%. (As of September 2022) In addition, 17.4% of managers are women, and there is no discrimination between men and women at work. Until the early 2000s, women were responsible for cleaning toilets and serving lunch, which was the old fashioned style. . The first thing I started with was the working environment. We refurbished it into a state-of-the-art women’s restroom and abolished uniforms to show individuality. In addition, we have transformed the company into a company that is easy for women to work in, such as implementing telework and encouraging the taking of childcare leave. In fact, according to the surveys we have conducted regularly within the company since 2020, when telework was introduced, many women have expressed the opinion that their work-life balance (balancing housework/childcare and work) has improved.

A vending machine introduced based on the opinion of a female employee ■ Product design realized with the opinions of women
We actively incorporate the perspectives and opinions unique to women in order to create products that are close to housewives who often live at home. On August 1, 2022, we renewed the shape of the sliding door. Four new shape proposals were prepared at the development stage, and 43 female employees who came to work that day voted, and the shape that received the most votes was adopted. In the past, a project team consisting of only female employees was formed to develop a pet door. The design and functionality of the product reflects the consideration and kindness that only women can offer.
■ Examples of women’s reform efforts
Here are some examples from 2015 onwards.
· 2015: The women’s restroom was renovated to the latest style, and a shelf for storing small items was newly installed.
・ 2015 Abolition of uniforms for female employees
・In 2016, an ice cream vending machine was installed at the request of a female employee.
・In 2016, outsourced toilet cleaning, which had been done by female employees on a shift basis.
· 2017 Started hiring new female employees in the manufacturing department ・2018 Dispatched a female employee for the first overseas training in the company
・ 2018 Additional women’s toilets in the factory
・ 2021 Setting up a diaper table for visitors to the Isehara Factory Showroom ・ 2022 Appointment of the first female director
As a result of incorporating the opinions of female employees in this way and prioritizing improvements, the turnover rate of our female employees was 39.4% in FY2014, but decreased significantly to 12.1% in FY2021. According to the results of the “2021 Employment Trend Survey (*2)” announced by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the average female turnover rate is 15.3%, which is below the average. Currently, women account for about 60% of our clerical staff, and our consulting company labor consultant even suggested that we acquire Eruboshi certification (*3) from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. In addition, on October 31, 2022, the first female director will be appointed, further expanding the scope of women’s activities. I believe that this can be called WX (Woman Transformation), a work style reform for women in the company. We will continue to create a comfortable working environment for all employees, not just women. [Image 5d20183-128-9c8bf85fc5b7f93a506a-4.jpg&s3=20183-128-c1a11faf587aa0562b6586c32de6553d-669x388.jpg
