Description: In the 3rd year of Bunkyu (1863), the 14th Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi boarded the steamship Shokaku Maru and set out for Kyoto. The samurai accepted the new Western technology of steamships and organized a Western-style navy. [Summary] The Yokohama Port Opening Museum was opened on June 2, 1981 (Showa 56), the anniversary of the opening of the port, based on the materials of the Yokohama City History Compilation Project, which was carried out to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of Yokohama Port. The land is the place where the Japan-U.S. Treaty of Peace and Amity was signed in 1854, and the old building is the former British Consulate General (a cultural property designated by Yokohama City).From the opening of the port in the mid-19th century to the Great Kanto Earthquake The Yokohama Archives of History collects, stores, organizes, researches, researches, and introduces the results in permanent exhibitions and special exhibitions, as well as in the reading room. It is a facility that plays a role as a “memory device of modern Yokohama” to pass down to generations.
