Katsushika Hokusai’s work transcended class and borders, denied elitism, and engaged the masses. This collaborative collection is a tribute to Katsushika Hokusai’s work expressed on a canvas called Dr. Martens.
Katsushika Hokusai underwent countless reforms until he began working on “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” at the age of 70. Katsushika Hokusai paved a new way for the general public to access the world of art. With the mass production of Katsushika Hokusai’s ukiyo-e, art was no longer reserved for the upper class. He sold thousands of copies, became the object of envy and collections, and became widely known for his creative spirit. Among Katsushika Hokusai’s representative works “Thirty-six Views of Mt. This work brilliantly captures the energy and possibilities of the moment and has a unique vitality. The first collaboration between The Met and Dr. Martens pays tribute to the timeless energy and inspiration of Katsushika Hokusai’s work, and expresses Katsushika Hokusai’s worldview on the original Dr. Martens icon as a canvas. Our gallery is where and who wears it, and whoever wears it is a collector. Art can be seen anywhere, and if you wear it, you can see it anywhere.
