The motifs of Yuta Fukuhara’s paintings include a wide range of subjects such as people, still life, and landscapes, and the types of paintings range from abstract paintings to figurative paintings. Fukuhara discovers the subject matter of his works when he is alone or in everyday life spent with friends. I create paintings while arranging them freely. Fukuhara says that he always wants to shorten the distance between the viewer of his paintings and himself, the artist, and relive the perspective he had when he was painting the paintings. In other words, it is a desire for non-verbal communication to share with strangers, feelings and perceptions that cannot be fully expressed in words, which one feels in one’s daily life through one’s works. It is an effective medium for this purpose. Nonetheless, Fukuhara never forces the viewer to view his paintings in the “correct” way, preferring to allow them to freely accept them through their own sensibilities. In the midst of an increasing number of contemporary art works that overly demand context and pre-requisite knowledge and compete only in terms of “difficulty”, Yuta Fukuhara’s painting practice is strikingly fresh.
