JDSC and Senko start pilot operation of “AI Foreman Project” to reduce man-hours for distribution warehouse work
– Combining AI with experience and intuition to achieve
standardization and sophistication of decision-making –

JDSC Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Satoshi Kato Eltes, hereinafter “JDSC” is a core company under the umbrella of logistics major Senko Group Holdings Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Koto-ku, Tokyo, President: Yasuhisa Fukuda). In collaboration with SENKO Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Osaka, President: Kenji Sugimoto, hereinafter referred to as “Senko”), we have introduced AI to calculate the man-hours of distribution warehouse staff and appropriately assign them, aiming to improve productivity. We have been promoting the AI Foreman* Project since January 2022. As a result of promoting the project, it has become possible to calculate the optimal man-hours based on the amount of goods, and there is room to reduce man-hours by more than 10% by using the waiting time of warehouse staff as a resource. We were able to confirm it, so we will start pilot operation for actual operation from November 2022.
* Foreman: A position within Senko that refers to a person who directs and supervises warehouse operations.
Background and issues
In distribution warehouses, where the amount of distribution changes daily, it is important to secure and appropriately assign staff. At SENKO, foremen used to calculate the required man-hours based on the experience and intuition they had cultivated so far and operate them on site.
Outline of “AI Foreman Project”
The “AI Foreman Project” is a project jointly promoted by Senko and JDSC to solve the above issues with AI and improve productivity. Aiming to standardize some of the work of foremen by combining AI with the work that had been carried out based on personal experience and knowledge, JDSC consulted Senko and developed the optimal AI algorithm. We are providing.
Intermediate progress of the project
・It is possible to calculate the optimal number of man-hours from the aspect of the amount of material, and it is confirmed that there is room for a 14% reduction in man-hours using waiting time as a resource.
・ Confirmed room for reducing “travel time” for collection work by optimizing location
・By sorting out the factors that affect productivity and subdividing the productivity target for each combination of factors, it is expected that the number of man-hours will be optimally mathematically derived for all patterns of quantity.
・From November 2022, as a pilot operation, AI will be introduced to forecast work man-hours and work progress management in daily operations at the Senko site, and verification will begin for practical use.
the next deployment
Starting with the current Senko Inzai Logistics Center (location: Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture), we plan to gradually expand to Senko bases throughout the country.
