At GAKU, a new creation school for teenagers, a product design class “Story and Craftsmanship” will be held from December 2022 with the support of Karimoku Furniture. Kodai Iwamoto, a product designer, will be the instructor. After entering the Department of Product Design at Kobe Design University, enrolled in the design project “Design Soil” and participated in many overseas exhibitions such as Milano Salone in Italy and Habitare in Finland. Currently, while actively working based in Tokyo, he is also promoting approaches to the field of education, such as presiding over the shared workshop “Studio Luminous Body” and teaching at a vocational school in Tokyo.
In the class, we went beyond the purpose of making a product and learned about the “big Japanese maple tree that used to grow at a shrine,”
After being felled due to fear of trees, they were carefully managed in search of suitable uses.” We will design products using the wood from various types of wood. The base of the design will be created at GAKU, and the actual work will be performed at the venue “Studio Luminous Body”. Please pay attention to all 11 special classes in which each teenage student creates and presents as a product designer.

Statement
The story contained in the material is spun through manufacturing. Today, the challenges of sustainability are pressing. Put aside the method of applying materials to what you want to make first, and touch the story that dwells in the materials you have now, and shape it into a product. increase.
The focus this time is “tree”. A tree that has been popular as a roadside tree for a long time, and a tree that is rarely used for timber due to its strong individuality. Even if it is difficult to become a general product, there are many trees that truly hold stories. While Karimoku Furniture is a furniture company, we continue to collect various types of wood beyond the purpose of making products, and continue to store them, including each story.
In this class, we will imagine a product based on the story of the wood stored by Karimoku Furniture.
Anyone who is interested in product design, who likes hands-on manufacturing, or who is interested in environmental issues can participate. We look forward to your participation.
