In a popular serialization in the comprehensive children’s literature magazine “Flying Classroom”, the first children’s literary work by the notable essayist Shonen Aya has been made into a book. This is a story in which the main character, who calls himself “Uma” and is neither a boy nor a girl, quietly looks at the contradictions and
unreasonableness he feels in his school life.
A “horse” who feels uncomfortable with group norms and the framework of “boys” and “girls” and can’t be himself at school. Triggered by something, such a “horse” takes a step forward to be free and be yourself. This is a book that gently snuggles up to children, adults who used to be children, and everyone who feels like they have no place to belong.

From the editor in charge
Even now, there are children who cannot “be themselves” at school. Unfortunately, the speed at which reality changes is not fast, so at least by making it a story, I hope that reality will catch up with the story, and I will send this book out into the world. The world drawn from the perspective of a child who calls himself “Uma” is surely connected to the school days that we have turned a blind eye to. Aya, a young boy, visualized these days with a brilliant sense of humor and a glittering writing style. Please reach out to a child who needs it. And may your courage be lit.
