It turns out that coffee has a relaxing effect! ? A coffee factory in Osaka collaborated with Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and MEETSHOP to verify the relaxation effect of coffee using a fatigue stress meter. Eight men and women in their 20s to 50s were asked to drink coffee in more than 20 different situations for a month and a half, and a total of 859 measurements were taken. We examined the effects of coffee on the autonomic nervous system and the situations in which we can relax.

Modern people are busy with housework, work, and environmental changes. Even if you try to find a little break and take a break, you can’t get out of concentration mode and you can’t relax well.
We wondered if coffee could solve these problems, so we conducted this experiment to verify the relaxing effects of coffee.

Three companies with specialized knowledge in each field jointly conduct a thorough investigation!

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (location: Nagaokakyo City, Kyoto Prefecture) and MEETSHOP Co., Ltd. (location: Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture) cooperated in conducting this experiment.
An experiment lasting about a month and a half was carried out using Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.’s electronic equipment and analysis based on big data, and MEETSHOP Co., Ltd.’s expertise in healthcare. [Image 4

In the experiment, a “fatigue stress meter (*1)” was used to measure and compare the autonomic nerve values before and after drinking coffee to verify the effects of coffee on the autonomic nerves. A total of 859 measurements were taken in more than 20 different situations for 8 men and women in their 20s to 50s.
The measured data was submitted to Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. for analysis.

In most of the experiments, we were able to measure parasympathetic dominance, which indicates a state of relaxation.
This suggests the possibility that drinking coffee can make you feel relaxed. However, there is also data that suggests that subjects may feel stressed depending on the situation, and it seems that the situation in which coffee is consumed is the key to the relaxation effect of coffee.
From this, it is thought that drinking coffee in the optimum environment that suits you will increase the relaxing effect of coffee.

What’s the most relaxing coffee situation?
[Image 6

In this experiment, measurements were taken in the following situations assumed when drinking coffee.

As a result, Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.’s view of “the optimal environment for oneself” was found to differ from subject to subject, and there was no situation in which everyone could equally relax. [Image 7

However, even in such a situation, the situation in which I felt a relatively relaxing effect in this experiment was “drinking coffee while watching images of nature.”
We focused on this experiment and performed additional measurements on various nature images.
Then, in the “video of the waterfall”, the same measurement of sympathetic nerve dominance was observed for multiple subjects, and when comparing silence and sound using the same video, the voiced measured parasympathetic nerve dominance. We got some interesting results.
From this,
・Choose images that are suitable for relaxation among nature images. ・Feeling nature not only visually but also aurally
is important.

What it means to make relaxation a habit
[Image 8

In addition, this experiment was conducted for one and a half months, but as the experiment continued, the subject felt that it became easier to relax than at the beginning.
Subject’s comments on this phenomenon are as follows:
▼ Comments from the subject (female in her 30s)
At the beginning of the experiment, I was just taking measurements as work, but midway through, I began to be conscious of “the appropriate environment that suits me.”
After that, I felt that the measurement ratio of parasympathetic nerve dominance was increasing.
I thought that the time to face yourself and relax itself is connected to relaxation.
▼Comment from the subject (Male in his 20s)
In this experiment, measurements were taken at the same time every day, but as the experiment continued, I felt that my body naturally began to prepare for a relaxed state when it came time to take measurements.
From this, I think that by making it a habit to take time to relax on a daily basis, it is possible to create a body that is easier to relax.

Product development based on experimental results
There is a high possibility that “drinking coffee while watching images of nature” will lead to relaxation.
Also, the importance of making relaxation a habit.
Based on these two points, for those who have trouble relaxing in their daily lives,
Is there anything I can do to help…
