National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City; President: Hiroshi Makino) Senior Vice President Atsufumi Yokoi, UNESCO Chairholder, and Tatsuya Sakamoto, Director of the Ushimado Marine Biological Station, UNESCO Vice Chair I visited the Sorbonne University Roscoff Biological Institute (Station Biologique de Roscoff).
At the UNESCO Chair for Research and Education for Sustainable Development at Okayama University, Ushimado is working on the UNESCO Decade for Marine Science related to the SDGs Goal 14: Life Below Water. The Marine Laboratory is collaborating with the Roscoff Institute for Biology, Europe’s top marine facility.
Roscoff and Ushimado are rich in organisms that grow in environments caused by tidal changes, and both are inhabited by intestinal animals (*1) that live symbiotically with algae. In order to conduct joint research on differences in environmental adaptation, Okayama University dispatched Mr. Tosuke Sakaue, a doctoral student from Okayama University, to Dr. Xavier Baili, Director of the Roscoff Institute for Biological Research from this September. and
international joint research.

In addition, in April 2023 next year, it has been decided that the head of the department will visit Okayama University as a visiting researcher for two months, and it is expected that the collaboration between the two will progress further.
At the time of the visit, Professor Sonia Carabina, Deputy Director of International Relations at the Sorbonne University, and Associate Professor Henrise Pocket, who is in charge of student exchange for the I-Mac program at Okayama University, were present. There was an explanation of the results of the student exchange with and future plans.
There are three students studying abroad at the university campus in Paris, just like Mr. Sakaue.
Sorbonne University (French: Sorbonne Universite) is a public research university in Paris, France. It was founded in 2018 through the merger of the University of Paris IV and the University of Paris VI, Pierre-Emarie-Curie, and smaller institutions. It is a world-class comprehensive research university with approximately 50,000 students, 10,000 international students, and 3,300 faculty members in the fields of humanities, social sciences, science and technology, and medicine. Okayama University has concluded a comprehensive agreement on inter-university exchange agreements since 2014, and has so far accepted 45 master’s students in the field of science and engineering. *1 Intestinal animals
A primitive bilateral animal with a simple body without a digestive system or circulatory system. Some species live symbiotically with algae to exchange nutrients. Ushimado and Roscoff are inhabited by algae-symbiotic related species, and they are good models for adapting to the environment because of differences in their behavioral patterns.
*2 Blue carbon
Carbon that is absorbed and stored by organisms in the sea. It accounts for 55% of the carbon that is fixed by living organisms on earth, and is attracting worldwide attention as a countermeasure against global warming. The biomass of Roscoff’s intestinal animals is very large and appears to be important to the blue carbon ecosystem. [Image 5
