Argonne researchers are using SambaNova’s previous generation system to develop surrogate models for improved weather forecast accuracy, accelerate computational fluid dynamics simulations for engine research, and increase resolution to accelerate discovery from experiments. Scientific use cases done so far include: Edge Computing: Using ALCF’s SambaNova system, we demonstrated how specialized AI systems can be used to rapidly train machine learning models in geographically distributed workflows. We also deployed the model to edge computing devices in close proximity to experimental data sources to enhance researchers’ ability to process and analyze large image datasets collected from light sources and other
experimental facilities.
Neutrino physics: To improve the efficiency of the neutrino signal, researchers leveraged ALCF’s SambaNova system to improve the classical image segmentation task, using images at their original resolution without the need for downsampling and creating new modern models. We have achieved a level of precision at the tip.
Cancer Prediction: ALCF’s new SambaNova platform offers the ability to drive efforts to predict tumor response to single and paired agents based on the molecular signature of tumor cells.
Climate Modeling: Researchers are using ALCF’s SambaNova system and deep learning techniques to develop surrogate models from publicly available weather and climate data. We aim to determine whether surrogate models can improve prediction accuracy compared to current deep learning deployments with downscaled data.
Engine research: As part of an effort to create a predictive computational design tool for next-generation engines, researchers are using ALCF’s SambaNova system to develop a scalable, fast and accurate prediction of turbulence in automotive engines.
