The Regional Mirai Creation Center, a general incorporated
association, held a work experience for elementary school students together with Super Nagano Prefecture A Co-op in Nagano Prefecture. The purpose of this program was to make people aware of the importance of the sea by learning how to distribute and sell fresh fish. I learned that many people are involved in the delivery of the fresh fish I eat to the store, and that the sales floor is full of ingenuity so that there are no unsold items even after it arrives at the store. It is a program filled with many lessons and realizations about the importance of living together, protecting the environment, and the blessings we receive from the sea. This event is part of the “Nippon Foundation ‘Sea and Japan Project'” that connects people through the sea in order to hand over the sea to the next generation.

The work experience site “A Co-op Farmers Shinonoi” is a large supermarket with fresh fish and agricultural products. Mr. Shimizu, who is in charge of purchasing fish for 29 A-co-op stores in Nagano Prefecture, will teach you about your work. A total of 5 children participated, including 2 6th graders, 2 5th graders, and 1 2nd grader.
First of all, Mr. Shimizu will teach you how to purchase fish with the keyword “directly from the farm”. Children cannot hide their amazement at the system of purchasing fresh fish directly from the fishing grounds and selling them at the store the day after they are caught. Next, I will move to the backyard and look at the fish that arrived at the store on the day.

One of the reasons is the rise in seawater temperature. A 1 degree rise in seawater temperature is equivalent to a 10 degree rise for humans, causing fish to migrate in search of a more livable
environment.
Another is overfishing. Many people around the world have started eating fish, and some species are in sharp decline, making it necessary to create a system to prevent overfishing. Faced with a sense of crisis that we might not be able to eat the fish we normally eat, we all discuss what we can do. Positive opinions such as “Eat without waste” and “Think about what you can do in your daily life to protect the marine environment” came out.

Sell ​​fish!
After learning, it’s finally time to practice. I will sell fish to customers using my own words about the charm of fish that I learned in the backyard. Each child expresses what they want to convey to customers on a board and head to the sales floor.
It’s lunchtime and the children are a little nervous, but they actively talk to the customers.
“The sashimi is fresh fish that arrived today.” “It’s fresh because the gills are red.” There was also a scene in which he gave a lecture to the audience about environmental changes in the sea that he had learned, and I could see the depth of his learning.

After finishing the sales experience, I will summarize what I learned today. Participants will give feedback on the flow of delicious fish to the store, the ingenuity of the store’s sales method, and the environmental changes occurring in the sea. The 5th grade boy seems to have been most impressed with the taste of the freshly cut tuna, so he wants to tell his family and friends the importance of the sea so that he can eat delicious fish! I was determined.
