In conjunction with Green Friday, the Share Eco Association and 10 sharing service companies collaborated on the theme of “GO GREEN”, which means taking action in consideration of the environment, from November 23 (Wednesday) to 25 (Friday). For three days, we will change Space Market’s Twitter logo to green and propose an opportunity to think about sustainable options. This initiative is a project planned by Air Closet, which is the lead company of the SDGs Promotion Committee within the Share Eco Association, with the desire to stop and think about consumption in recent years when there are more options for consumption. While there is a call for a change from mass production and mass consumption to sustainable consumption, large-scale sales such as Black Friday continue to exist. We aim to make a difference by proposing to the world.
The real estate industry is no exception, and the space-sharing market, in which existing spaces are not “occupied” but “shared”, is expanding. According to a survey by Nomura Research Institute, Ltd., by 2033, the number of vacant houses, which are not used by anyone, is expected to reach 21.5 million, and the vacant house rate is expected to rise to 30.2%. Expectations are rising from the perspective of resolving social issues for new markets created by sharing idle spaces such as these vacant houses.
Space Market supports this initiative and will continue to contribute to a sustainable society that leaves no one behind and has a low environmental impact through space sharing.
▼Comments from the Recycling Promotion Office, General Affairs Division, Environmental Reclamation and Resource Recycling Bureau, Ministry of the Environment
In order to create a recycling-oriented society, it is necessary to promote thorough resource recycling throughout the entire life cycle. From this point of view, it is important to establish and popularize 2R (reduce and reuse) businesses such as sharing as businesses while evaluating the environmental impact of their spread.
In September 2022, the Ministry of the Environment announced a roadmap for accelerating the transition to a circular economy. It shows the direction to go. We hope that this event will help spread the sharing business.
▼Comment from Anju Ishiyama, Representative Director of Sharing Economy Association
The size of the sharing economy market has reached a record high of 2.4 trillion yen, and the number of users of sharing services has expanded and their uses have diversified. In a survey on the relationship between the sharing economy and the SDGs conducted jointly with Information and Communications Research Institute, Inc., one in four people who used sharing services answered that the amount of garbage had actually decreased (* 1) It was also found that the reduction effect exceeds the amount of CO2 emissions that the lodging and retail industries emit in a year (*2). Our association will serve as a bridge between companies, consumers, and governments, and we will continue to work together as an industry to promote sustainability. Comment from Mr. Hiroyo Koike, director and secretary general of the Shibuya Ward Tourism Association
The tourism industry has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, and at the same time, the world is reconsidering new ways of travel, represented by responsible tourism, green tourism, and conscious travel. By using and utilizing sharing services, it is possible to choose various ways to enjoy while solving many problems such as consideration for the environment due to mass consumption and the use of micro-mobility as a means of transportation, while at the same time providing convenience and functionality. So, I would like to promote further in the city of Shibuya.
