Chubu Nippon Plastic Co., Ltd. (Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture) Our project to promote cyclical use by recycling PET film (with slurry) has been adopted for the second round of public offering for the “Project to improve resource recycling for waste plastic (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry)”! !
New value and a place of activity for “slurry-coated PET film” that was difficult to recycle!

Slurry (barium titanate) is applied to the PET film discharged during the production of ceramic capacitors. Therefore, it is difficult to recycle, and most of it is disposed of as industrial waste. However, in cooperation with machinery and equipment manufacturers, we have made many prototypes and have achieved results in the development and introduction of slurry removal equipment.
Last time, we were selected for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s “Project for Advanced Resource Recycling of Waste Plastics” for introducing new equipment in the recycling of automobile-derived plastic parts. A project to promote the cyclical use of waste film by expansion” has been adopted for the second subsidy project!

About adopted project
Some of the industrial products that use plastics are not recycled because they are difficult to separate.
One of them is the “PET film” discharged during the manufacture of ceramic capacitors. It is coated with a substance called slurry, and because it is difficult to peel off, it is not recycled and is disposed of as industrial waste.
So far, we have worked together with machinery and equipment manufacturers to build prototypes, and have successfully developed and introduced slurry removal equipment, with a record of processing 1,053 tons per year.
“PET film with slurry”, which is usually disposed of as industrial waste, is purchased from a ceramic capacitor manufacturer, processed into a recycled raw material after the slurry is peeled off, and carbon nanotubes are added and kneaded to a part of it to master. It is difficult to recycle by manufacturing a batch*, blending the recycled raw material and masterbatch, and selling it as a raw material for “carrier tape” used for transporting and storing microchips and semiconductor parts of semiconductors and electronic parts. We will continue to create new value and a place of activity in the “PET film with slurry”.
In this project, which was adopted in the second round of public offering for the Waste Plastic Resource Recycling Project, slurry removal equipment and a PET ruder machine (extrusion machine) were added, and the processing volume was doubled from 1,053 tons per year to 2,100 tons per year. In addition, we plan to introduce a kneader and blender for masterbatch production to enable the production of carrier tape raw materials and promote the recycling of discharged films.
*Masterbatch: A solid additive for plastics used to color plastics or impart other properties to plastics.

What is the Waste Plastic Resource Recycling Promotion Project? This project will be implemented by the Japan Organic Recycling Association (JORA) after receiving the 2021 supplementary “subsidy for advanced resource recycling of waste plastic” from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. is a part of the expenses required for private companies, etc. to introduce equipment and facilities necessary for implementing plastic resource recycling initiatives at each stage of design/manufacture, sales/provision, and
discharge/collection/recycling. By subsidizing , it is to realize the transition to autonomous efforts for advanced resource recycling of waste plastics.

What are you doing?
In modern society, where everything has become mechanized and convenient, capacitors are used in most electronic components and have become an indispensable part of our lives. In particular,
Japanese-made capacitors have gained trust in quality and have the world’s No. 1 market share, so production of ceramic capacitors is on the rise.
However, the amount of waste generated during capacitor manufacturing is also increasing proportionately. In the past, slurry-coated PET films were exported overseas for recycling. Currently, some of it is thermally recycled (used as a fuel resource), and most of it is disposed of as industrial waste.
PET film with slurry is difficult to recycle, but we are in the business of recovering valuable PET film from capacitor manufacturers, recycling it, and selling it back to the market as a recycled raw material.
how?
In the material recycling of plastic resin, in order to manufacture recycled raw materials with stable quality, it is required that “the base material should not be contaminated with dirt or impurities” and that “other resin should not be mixed in”. .
Therefore, the separation of the base material becomes important. However, it is difficult to separate the slurry from the PET film coated with the slurry.
Therefore, we have developed and introduced slurry removal equipment through trial production with machine equipment manufacturers, and we are processing 1053 tons per year.
Specifically, the slurry-coated PET film is passed through a slurry stripper (also called a coating stripper) to remove the slurry applied to the surface. It is put into an extruder to produce recycled pellets.

After that?
Recycled pellets themselves have a market value, but we aim to go one step further in value creation by recycling carrier tape raw materials. Carrier tape is a tape used for transporting and storing semiconductors, electronic microchips, and semiconductor parts. Therefore, carbon nanotubes are kneaded into some of the recycled pellets made from PET film to produce a functional masterbatch (conductive), and the masterbatch is blended with the recycled pellets and processed as a raw material for carrier tape.
By developing applications for carrier tape, we will expand the use of recycled resin raw materials and contribute to the promotion of plastic recycling.

What’s good about you?
1. Doubled the annual processing volume and promoted the recycling of waste films
So far, we have processed 1,053 tons of PET film per year, but with the expansion of facilities and the introduction of new equipment in this project, we expect to have a processing capacity of 2,100 tons per year, which will lead to the promotion of cyclical use of discharged PET film. .
2. Reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
PET films coated with slurry are mostly incinerated as industrial waste, except for thermal recycling. As a result, a lot of carbon dioxide (CO2) is emitted. However, CO2 emissions from incineration can be reduced by recycling it as a recycled raw material or carrier tape raw material.
In addition, CO2 is used as a raw material in the production process of carbon nanotubes, which are used as additives for imparting conductivity. Together with the reduction of CO2 emissions through recycling, this will contribute to further CO2 reduction.
3. Reduction of processing costs for ceramic capacitor manufacturers For ceramic capacitor manufacturers, it is now possible to sell the slurry-attached PET film as a plastic resource (purchased by our company) as a valuable plastic resource, which has traditionally been treated as industrial waste, thereby reducing treatment costs. 4. Initiatives for SDGs
From the perspective of a company that emits plastic resources, it is possible to prevent CO2 emissions from incineration by selling plastic resources to our company instead of disposing of them as industrial waste.
In addition, from the perspective of plastic product manufacturers, it is possible to reduce the amount of new fossil raw materials used by using recycled plastic raw materials as an alternative to regular raw materials (those refined from petroleum).
In this way, this project is not only aimed at improving our production capacity, but we can also expect ripple effects on the companies and the environment with which we do business, and it can be said that it is a project that meets the needs of modern society. . The corporate philosophy of Chubu Nippon Plastic Co., Ltd. is “Happy Eco”. In addition to the plastic material recycling business
(recycling/recycling, plastic purchase/collection, plastic raw material sales, compound preparation, resin recycling machine sales), we are also working on various environmental activities (Eco Net Project). . It is difficult to continue eco for a long time because it is painful to put up with it and feel inconvenient. We aim to create an eco-friendly environment that makes everyone happy, and we hope that not only our company but also everyone involved with our company will be happy, and we want to leave a more beautiful earth for the future.
