Inviting traditional industry operators in Tokyo as collaborators of Tatehana, we will explore the
characteristics of traditional industries, starting with Tatehana’s creative process “Rethink”, which is to “revise the past of Japanese culture and express it in the present age”. is reinterpreted in modern times, and through the works, we propose the craftsmanship and charm of traditional industries that have been handed down from ancient times in a new form.
This year, the venue for the “Edo Tokyo Rethink Exhibition” held online was the “Former Iwasaki Residence Garden,” which was built in 1986 and is now designated as a national important cultural property. . The reason why I chose this historical building as the stage is because I wanted to create an exhibition system that allows people to travel from the past to the present and the future through space. In addition, behind the things that Tatehana tackles as a writer, there is the basic idea of ”Rethink” mentioned earlier. Like the concept of the Edo Tokyo Kirari Project, “Old meets New,” it also means “tradition meets innovation.” It is

Ryukoubou produces silk braided cords called kumihimo, which are used for kimono sashes. The collaborative work, Heel-less Shoes, uses thick rectangular braids dyed differently on the front and back. This is Ryu Koubou’s specialty, and it is also a craftsmanship that has been handed down from ancient times. In places that look like unevenness, “one knot” is evenly applied to create an expression.

Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten, which handles Japanese drums and portable shrines, created a drum called Raiko, which is held by the god of thunder. The taiko drums made by the craftsmen of Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten were connected in a circular shape and painted in Tatehana’s studio. In addition to thunder drums assembled in a circle, various large and small thunder drums are exhibited as new works as stationary objects.

Isehan Honten is a red lipstick that uses a very rare red pigment extracted from the petals of the safflower called Komachi Beni. The rouge used in the collaborative work “Heel-less Shoes” has a “red color” when used as a dye, but after dyeing the leather, it develops an “irridescent” color as the surface dries. increase. This is called structural color, and it is a coloring phenomenon that can also be seen in the natural world in morpho butterflies and abalone shells. After many trials, such as the color of the base for dyeing crimson on the leather and the density of the dye, the iridescent “Heel-less Shoes” were born.
In addition to the above works, woodblock prints with “Edo Mokuhanga Takahashi Studio”, glass objects with “Edo Kiriko Hanashyo”, zipper tops of heelless shoes using the Mokume Gane technique of “Mokume Gane Mokume Ganeya”, etc. Works using various techniques are exhibited. Descending Painting, 2022
In the Descending Painting Series, which is exhibited as a new painting in this exhibition, the karahana pattern is inspired by the design of the gold leather paper produced in the Meiji period. Influenced by Western ornamental patterns, the karahana pattern on Kinkarakashi paper produced in Japan can be said to be a product of cultural exchange, just like the concept of “Rethink” advocated by Tatehana. Focusing on such matters, Tatehana draws thunder as a metaphor for the gods and buddhas, and adds karahana patterns as yoshiro.
