A long-awaited reprint with a total of 4 items of plates and bowls. Inspired by the nature of the Arctic Circle, “Tundra” features fine and beautiful patterns that bring out the beauty and delicacy of the glass.

Iittala has amassed a vast archive of designs that have played an important role in the history, development and innovation of Finnish glass design for over 140 years. Tundra designed by Oiva Toikka, 1970 A series made at the Nuutajärvi glass factory, the predecessor of Iittala, for a period of only about 2 years from 1971.
It is still very popular in the vintage market today.
This winter, Iittala has decided to bring back the Tundra glass pieces and add them to its classic collection.
INSPIRATION FROM THE NORTHERN LAND
Oiva Toikka is the designer behind many of Iittala’s popular collections, including the popular Iittala series Kastehelmi and Frutta, as well as the iconic Bird by Toikka art piece. His designs are original, fun to look at, and have characteristics that give you a sense of individuality and freedom. Toikka takes a lot of its design inspiration from nature and creatures, and Tundra was one of them. The Tundra is one of Toikka’s favorite designs and has been waiting for a reissue for many years.
Early in her career as a designer, Oiva Toikka spent time in Lapland, northern Finland.

This time, based on the original design, 4 items, 2 size tumblers, plates and bowls, will be released to suit the current lifestyle. The tumblers are available in two sizes, 290ml and 160ml. A large all-purpose tumbler (290cc) can be drunk with ice
Versatile size suitable for drinks. The smaller tumbler (160ml) is also suitable as a glass for short drinks, pressed juices, water and sips of beer.
A plate of about 154 mm and a bowl of 250 cc are useful for various purposes such as breakfast, tea time, appetizers and fruits. The delicate and beautiful pattern of Tundra made up of these four items complements Japanese cuisine beautifully.
Combine it with Iittala’s other glass and porcelain items for a more glamorous table setting.
Oiva Toikka
Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of Finland’s legendary glass designers. The imaginative, bold, colorful and artistic glass works are characterized by a style that sets them apart from Scandinavian design, which gives a simple, somewhat quiet and sophisticated impression. His design activities ranged from glass to stage costumes, fashion items, and interior items.
Since the 1950s, Toikka has been highly acclaimed internationally through various design activities with well-known Finnish and foreign designers and artists. It has also won numerous prestigious awards such as the Kaj Franck Design Award and the Prince Eugen Medal. In 1993, he was awarded the honorary title of Art Professor by the Finnish government.
Among Oiva Toikka’s many works, the Bird by Toikka series combines the boundless imagination of artist Oiva Toikka with her expertise in the properties of glass. The unique and colorful birds created entirely by hand have gained enthusiastic support from collectors around the world.
