Keidanren Committee on Nature Conservation
In collaboration with the Keidanren Committee on Nature Conservation and the Ministry of the Environment, we contributed a total of 300 million yen over six years to the Satoyama Initiative Promotion Program implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). – Contributing to the achievement of new global biodiversity goals –
1. At the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD/COP15) currently being held in Montreal, Canada, we plan to adopt a new international framework (global goals) that will succeed the Aichi Targets.
2. In order to contribute to the achievement of this new global goal, the Keidanren Committee on Nature Conservation, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment and through the Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund, has launched the Satoyama Initiative Promotion Program, which is implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). We plan to provide financial support of 100 million yen (total amount for 6 years from 2023 to 2028). Together with the Ministry of the Environment’s total support of 700 million yen, the public and private sectors will contribute 1 billion yen.
3. On December 17th (December 16th local time) at the COP venue in Montreal, Minister of the Environment Nishimura, Secretary-General of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (under negotiation), Mr. Nishizawa, Chairman of the Keidanren Committee on Nature Conservation, and others A launch event (*) will be held with the participation of relevant parties (see below). The Satoyama Initiative Promotion Program provides support based on Japan’s knowledge and experience in the field of biodiversity conservation in developing countries. 1. Satoyama Initiative Promotion Program (Community Development and Knowledge Management for the Satoyama Initiative, COMDEKS)
Natural environments such as paddy fields and reservoirs in Japan, which have been maintained and managed by humans (so-called secondary natural environments), exist in countries around the world. A program established by the Japan Biodiversity Fund, established in June 2011 with contributions from the Japanese government, with the aim of supporting local activities for the maintenance and reconstruction of these facilities.
From 2011 to 2020, through the Japan Biodiversity Fund, a total of $12.5 million in contributions has been funded to implement Phases 1 through 3 of COMDEKS.
To date, we have supported a total of 216 community-led projects in 20 countries around the world (supported countries: Cambodia, India, Nepal, Fiji, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Slovakia, Turkey, Bhutan in Brazil, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Mongolia, Niger, Namibia).
In Phase 4, which will start anew, toward the implementation of the post-2020 biodiversity framework, 30 by 30 including OECM (areas that contribute to biodiversity conservation outside of protected areas) and “nature-based solutions (NbS)” in developing countries. , contribute to the promotion of SDGs.
