Japan’s first eco-friendly cap seal -Reduces CO2 emissions by 36% with waste material-“Eggshell cap seal”

Koshi Kagaku Kogyo Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture) has jointly developed an environmentally friendly LP gas cylinder cap seal with Air Water Inc. (Head Office: Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture). From February 2023, we plan to gradually switch the disposable caps handled by LP gas companies to new caps. This makes it possible to reduce annual plastic usage by 50% and CO2 emissions by 36%.
A cap seal covers the gas filling port (valve) of a gas cylinder, and is often used by LP gas companies to mark the completion of gas filling and to prevent foreign matter from entering. We have successfully developed an eco-friendly cap seal by reviewing the design of the cap seal and utilizing waste materials. Discarded eggshells and recycled plastic from home appliances are used as materials, which not only reduces CO2 emissions, but also contributes to the realization of a recycling-oriented society by reducing waste and promoting recycling.

Eggshell plastic is an “eco-plastic” that mixes waste eggshells with recycled plastic. It is attracting attention because it leads to environmental protection by reducing the amount of petroleum resource-derived plastic (polypropylene) used and by reusing waste. In Japan, 260,000 tons of eggshells are discarded annually, most of which are disposed of as industrial waste. Similarly, a large amount of plastic is also discarded, and 120,000 tons of plastic is collected annually from household appliances. Currently, each type of waste is simply incinerated or landfilled without being 100% recycled. When considering the realization of a recycling-oriented society in the future, “waste recycling” is an urgent domestic issue.

New cap seal enlargement
The jointly developed eggshell cap seal is both economical and environmentally friendly.
▼Economy: The required number of cap seals is reduced to 1/5 Reviewed the design that was premised on conventional disposables, and changed to a structure that can be used multiple times.
▼Environmental: 36% reduction in CO2 emissions, reduction in waste Containing 50% discarded eggshells reduces the amount of plastic used and reduces CO2 emissions.
the next deployment
The Air Water Group sells LP gas under the “Hello Gas” brand to about 500,000 households and businesses, mainly in Hokkaido, which has a sales network of more than 100 bases. About 1.5 million are in use. By switching to “eggshell cap seals”, it is possible to significantly reduce the number of seals used to about 300,000, which is one-fifth of the conventional number.
In the future, we will also consider using raw materials other than eggshells, such as scallops and oyster shells. Recycled plastic for home appliances will continue to be supplied by Air Water Ecorocka Inc., which manufactures artificial recycled wood “Ecorocka” made from waste wood and waste plastic in the Air Water Group.
