[Okayama University] New world record! Succeeded in attacking elliptic pairing cryptographic curve of 116-digit binary order in decryption of practical cryptography in the IoT era

-Points of announcement-
We broke the record of successful attack against elliptic curve of elliptic pairing cipher, which is one of practical cryptography. Achieved multiple successful attacks in one experiment.
We were also able to document in detail how the attack technique became less efficient over time.
◆Overview
With the promotion of ICT, nowadays sensitive information is exchanged by communication on a daily basis, encryption technology is the key to protecting confidential information. The security of elliptic curve cryptography has been rigorously evaluated through large-scale decryption experiments.
National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City; President: Hiroshi Makino) Professor Yasuyuki Nogami, Department of Natural Sciences, Academic Research Institute We conducted a large-scale decoding experiment and succeeded in deciphering an elliptic discrete logarithm problem on a pairing curve with a size of 116 binary digits, or 35 decimal digits.
This record is a feat that doubles (in terms of difficulty) the record for deciphering a 114-digit binary number in 2017 led by the same team.
In addition, we have changed the format from one experiment that usually ends with one successful attack to multiple attacks, and at this point we have achieved six successful attacks, which is also an unprecedented achievement.
In the future, we plan to analyze the acquired data and report the details at an academic conference. In addition, this achievement will contribute to the devising of improved methods for attacking high-performance cryptography, and will provide new knowledge regarding the accurate evaluation of the security of practical cryptography.

A word from Professor Yasuyuki Nogami
This experiment was accomplished by utilizing the facilities of the Hokuriku StarBED Technology Center of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT).
Our research group achieved a new record by tailoring the StarBED system, which is a testbed, as a loosely coupled parallel and distributed supercomputer. The attack experiment has been underway for three years, but we have been able to operate stably by receiving careful maintenance work. Since I was always calculating at full power, there was a topic that “It’s obviously hot when I pass behind the computer I’m lending to Mr. Nogami.”
