◆Overview
Research Assistant Professor Kentaro Matsumura of the Entomology Laboratory, Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences, National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Hiroshi Makino) received the 2022 Japan Ethological Society Award. On November 23, 2022, I gave an award ceremony and an award lecture at the 41st Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Animal Behavior held in Fukuoka City.
The Award of the Japanese Society of Ethology was established with the aim of further revitalizing the field of animal behavior by
recognizing excellent research in the current field of animal behavior, regardless of the career of the researcher. . The target of the award is not the entire achievement of an individual researcher, but the achievement consisting of up to three well-organized papers that can be regarded as one content.
The title of the award this time was “Research into the effects of artificial selection on the migratory activity of the flour beetle on reproductive traits.” research was evaluated.

In many animals, locomotion is an ecologically important behavior, but individual differences in locomotion activity (locomotion activity) are often observed within a group. However, many mysteries remain as to why individual differences in locomotion activity are maintained within populations.
Research Assistant Professor Matsumura conducted artificial selection for migratory activity in the model organism, Trigum beetle, and established strains with high and low migratory activity,
respectively. As a result of comparing reproductive traits using this selected line, it became clear that there is a trade-off relationship between migratory activity and reproduction.
These results suggest that differences in migratory activity have a significant impact on reproductive traits, and that individual differences in migratory activity may be maintained within the population.
