【Title】
The acquisition, possession, and sharing of metal weapons in the Kofun period and their historical significance
【overview】
The Kofun period (from the middle of the 3rd century to the beginning of the 7th century) is characterized by the construction of large numbers of burial mounds throughout the Japanese archipelago as a sign of the status of influential people. In addition, it is believed that these tombs were constructed in the midst of socio-political relations with the Yamato government, and that bronze mirrors and metal weapons were distributed by the Yamato government to influential people in various regions as proof of this political relationship. .
In this way, many of the metal weapons unearthed from burial mounds have been taken as physical evidence of a direct relationship between local influential figures and the Yamato regime.
On the other hand, in recent years, the diverse history of metal weapons has been attracting attention. In addition to distribution by the Yamato government, which has traditionally been emphasized, it is also pointed out that there are exchanges between influential people and local production.
In this presentation, I would like to focus on the diversity and stratification of production and distribution, and reexamine the background to the acquisition of metal weapons in the Kofun period and their historical significance.
