-Points of announcement-
Although universal dental checkups have become a hot topic, the rate of regular dental checkups remains low.
To investigate the factors that influence the willingness to undergo regular dental checkups, we investigated the relationship between oral hygiene behaviors such as tooth brushing habits, health belief models, and risk aversion.
Willingness to undergo regular dental checkups was related to oral hygiene behavior and health belief model, but not to risk aversion. By understanding the related factors, it may be possible to aim to improve the participation rate of regular dental checkups in the future.
◆Overview
In order to maintain good oral health, it is important to have regular dental checkups. However, after graduating from high school, the current situation is that there are few people who continue to receive dental checkups because it depends on their own will. Therefore, we conducted a survey of Okayama University students with the aim of investigating the factors that influence their willingness to undergo regular dental checkups.
Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita Ward, Okayama City; President: Hiroshi Makino), Dr. Ichiro Tsunoda, Department of Dentistry and Preventive Dentistry, Okayama University Hospital, Professor Manabu Morita, Department of Preventive Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University found that oral hygiene behaviors and a health belief model were associated with willingness to undergo routine dental checkups, but not risk aversion. The results of this research were published online in the academic journal “International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health” on October 26, 2024.
Based on the results of this study, an approach based on the factors related to the willingness to undergo dental checkups will improve future dental checkup behavior and increase the number of people with improved oral health. There is a possibility.
This report was released at the Okayama University regular press conference on November 30, 2022.

A word from Dr. Ichiro Tsunoda
“There are so many opportunities for preventive dentistry to have dental checkups, and I see the insides of various people’s mouths every day!” Cavities and periodontal disease are relatively rare among young people, but they also increase among university students. “It’s a shame that I haven’t paid attention to prevention since I was young.” I hope that more people will check their mouths regularly to maintain healthy teeth.
