National Institute of Technology, Independent Administrative Institution [Ichinoseki National College of Technology] GEAR5.0 Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries field: Start land-based sea urchin farming project in Saitama, a prefecture without a sea!

National Institute of Technology, Ichinoseki National College of Technology (Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, Principal: Nobuo Araki, hereinafter referred to as “Ichinoseki National College of
Technology”) is located in Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture.
Representative Director: Kazuko Yama))”, we are promoting the social implementation of sea urchin farming using hot spring water
(aquaculture project from Uminashi Prefecture & KOSEN). This project is positioned as a major initiative in the field of GEAR5.0
Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, a project of the National Institute of Technology.
December 15, 2022 (Thursday) Saitama Prefecture Kuki Sogo Bunka Kaikan small hall, a two-part lecture and press conference to announce the kickoff of this project.
Purpose of the event
Compared to the rest of the world, Japan’s total catch is on a downward trend year by year, and sea aquaculture in inner bays is stagnant. In the GEAR 5.0 agriculture, forestry and fisheries field, aquaculture can be carried out in prefectures without the sea or in areas far from the sea. We believe that we can revitalize Japan’s fisheries industry from the “land” by promoting the law), and we believe that the problems of land-based aquaculture are “there is no ideal purification technology!” and “the cost is high!” We focus on research to solve As the first step to give shape to this result, we will collaborate with Yamatake, which operates a hot spring complex in Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture, and will use an aquaculture system incorporating technical college technology to ship the first sea urchin in November 2023. We are preparing to be able to do it! (Aquaculture project from Seanashi Prefecture & KOSEN)
This lecture and press conference will be held with the expectation that the kick-off declaration of the collaborative project between Kosen and Yamatake will expand the circle of new collaboration in sealess prefectures and boost the Japanese fisheries industry from the “land”. was held.
Lecture and press conference
The kick-off declaration will be held on December 15, 2022 (Thursday) at the small hall of the Kuki General Cultural Center in Saitama Prefecture. It was held in the form of a two-part presentation (from 15:30, 6 newspaper companies, 3 TV stations).

Officials announce a land-based sea urchin farming project in Saitama, a prefecture without a sea
Prior to the lecture, Kuki City Mayor Shuichi Umeda, Yamatake Managing Director Daigo Yamanaka, and Principal Nobuo Araki gave greetings. Mayor Umeda said, “We would like to cooperate with Ichinoseki National College of Technology and Yamatake to develop farmed sea urchin as a special product of Kuki City.” Principal Araki said, “Technical colleges are good at manufacturing, and they are well suited to land-based aquaculture, where they manage and grow seafood. They had high expectations for the project.
At the lecture, Associate Professor Takashi Watanabe of our school (GEAR5.0 agriculture, forestry and fisheries field, sub-leader of the Ichinoseki National College of Technology unit sub-leader) talked about the current situation and issues of the fisheries industry and aquaculture, GEAR5.0 agriculture, forestry and fisheries field efforts, and from Uminashi Prefecture & KOSEN He explained and introduced the outline and prospects of the aquaculture project. Associate Professor Watanabe uses the ozone purification technology jointly patented by the National Institute of Technology and Yamatake to solve the two major challenges of land-based closed-loop
aquaculture, which is the closed-loop land-based aquaculture that enables fish and shellfish farming in Uminashi Prefecture. I explained the plan to solve the problem by developing a water temperature control system using hot spring water and groundwater, and an automatic feeding system using artificial intelligence (AI). Furthermore, a farming system incorporating these technologies will be built by March 2023, and trial operation will start in September of the same year. We have announced a plan to prepare a system that can be done.
At the press conference, we announced the kickoff of this project in the form of a digest version of the lecture.
The word “aquaculture” in a “prefecture without sea” has attracted a lot of attention, and many media outlets have covered the content of this project (Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Yomiuri Shimbun, Tokyo Shimbun, TV Saitama, Cable TV Kuki). In the future, we would like to steadily proceed with preparations while staying close to our partner companies and lead this project to success.

GEAR5.0 Overview of initiatives in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries fields
GEAR5.0 agriculture, forestry and fisheries fields
The agriculture, forestry and fisheries field, which is one of the fields of the “Society 5.0 future technology human resource
development project / GEAR 5.0” project of the National Institute of Technology, which aims to advance the social implementation education of future technology, is the core base school Toba Shosen. Focusing on technical colleges and 4 cooperating schools (Hakodate, Ichinoseki, Wakayama, Anan Colleges), we are working on the main theme of the DX promotion project for agriculture, forestry and fisheries from “taking” to “making”.
