◆Overview
National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita Ward, Okayama City; President: Hiroshi Makino) will hold the “61st Ceramic Basic Science Symposium” on January 7th and 8th, 2023 at the general education building of Okayama University Tsushima Campus. About 280 people participated, including researchers from universities and private companies.
This discussion meeting is held every January and is the second largest conference after the annual meeting of the Ceramic Society of Japan.

Professor Tsuruta giving a lecture on acoustic
metamaterials/topological phononics
A special lecture was given by Professor Kenji Tsuruta of the Faculty of Science, Department of Natural Sciences. Professor Tsuruta specializes in nanomaterials and is one of Okayama University’s leading researchers. In the lecture titled “Acoustic
Metamaterials/Topological Phononics: Condensed Matter Science Approach to Acoustic and Elastic Wave Control,” the fundamental properties of “acoustic metamaterials”, which are artificial materials exhibiting unique acoustic and elastic wave response characteristics, were presented. A general introduction to “topological phononics”, which is expected to be applied to new acoustic and elastic wave devices, and their recent research status. This lecture was attended by many researchers and students who specialize in ceramics. A
question-and-answer session was also provided, and the audience seemed to be greatly stimulated by hearing about the latest research in fields that they would not normally be able to hear about.
After the lecture was over, some of the audience members talked with Professor Tsuruta, and the discussion turned into a heated discussion that transcended different fields. Part of the discussion was supported by Okayama University’s symposium expenses.
