-Points of announcement-
In 1908 (Meiji 41), I discovered that a keyhole-shaped tumulus was reflected in a photograph taken when the army camp was being built (present-day Tsushima, Kita Ward, Okayama City).
Although it has already been lost, it was known that there was a group of burial mounds including keyhole-shaped burial mounds in Tsushima. This time, as a result of comparing it with past research and cadastral maps, the one in the photo was recognized as a new keyhole-shaped tumulus.
It has been revealed that several keyhole-shaped burial mounds were built in the latter half of the 5th century on the plains of the western bank of Asahikawa including Tsushima. It shows that the Kibi group split into multiple smaller groups after the Tsukuriyama mounded tomb.
◆Overview
In March 2022, an old photograph from the construction of the 17th Army Division was brought to the Research Center for Archaeological Properties of Okayama University (currently the Cultural Heritage Management Department of the Research Institute for Dynamics of Civilization, Okayama). I discovered that there is a ridge that has been divided into the ground.
It is known that several ancient tombs, including keyhole-shaped burial mounds, were clustered together in Tsushima Fukui at the foot of Mt. Handa. Among them, there is a detailed report on the
keyhole-shaped burial mound called Otsuka-sama Kofun, which is estimated to be about 30 meters long and dated to the late middle Kofun period (late 5th century).
This time, we verified whether the discovered keyhole-shaped land division can be recognized as a keyhole-shaped tumulus, and as a result, we came to the conclusion that it is appropriate to recognize it as a keyhole-shaped tumulus. Next, we checked whether this keyhole-shaped tumulus was a Tsukasama tumulus or not, and found that it was a different keyhole-shaped tumulus from the Otsukasama tumulus. Following the customary practice of using small letters when naming sites, we named the keyhole-shaped burial mound that we discovered “Tsukano-mae Kofun.”
From this discovery, it has been speculated that multiple
keyhole-shaped tumuli were continuously constructed in the latter half of the middle Kofun period (the latter half of the 5th century) in the plains downstream of Asahikawa. After the Tsukuriyama Kofun (Kita Ward, Okayama City), the process by which the Kibi group split into multiple smaller groups and became independent became clearer. [Image 2

I never expected that a keyhole-shaped tumulus would appear in a photograph taken in 1908 (Meiji 41) when the 17th Army Division was being constructed. It was lost due to development after the war, and most people have never seen it. Once we solved the problem of the discrepancy in the lot number, we solved one problem after another, and finally came to the conclusion that it was a newly discovered keyhole-shaped tumulus.
