The subject and significance of the Han dynasty image stone 【overview】
In ancient China, various images and patterns were carved on flat stone materials, and those that were mainly used to decorate graves are called “image stones”. Han Dynasty tombs, which use image stones for decoration, reflect the view of life and death at that time. The custom of ‘thorough burial’, in which multiple burial chambers are prepared and a tomb is constructed with luxurious items buried in it, is recognized.
Image stone tombs were popular from the late Western Han to the late Eastern Han (1st century BC to early 3rd century AD). There is regional coherence in the distribution, and each region has its own characteristics in engraving techniques and subject matter. The subjects of the paintings cover a wide range of topics, including the social status and lifestyle of the cemetery owner during his lifetime, as well as divine immortals, myths, and historical events. It was originally a building material for tombs, and based on that, it has significance as a historical material.
Image stones have attracted attention as works of art, and many have been brought to Japan. Introduce materials in Japan and consider their history.
