Rohde & Schwarz and Nothing Technology collaborate to commercialize new 5G-enabled Nothing Phone (1)
The new R&S CMX500 one-box tester combines flexibility and superior performance in one instrument. Realize the research and development of complex 5G carrier aggregation and application layer performance.
Rohde & Schwarz and Nothing Technology have joined forces in the research and development process, and for Nothing Technology’s new smartphone Phone (1), its 5G multi-band carrier aggregation and application layer performance will be integrated into the R&S CMX500 One Box.・Evaluated using a signaling tester. Through this cooperation, Nothing Technology has been able to realize the launch of new devices and meet all compliance requirements for current and future complex 5G carrier aggregation and application layer performance.

5G NR will improve communication performance for end-users due to its low latency, as well as significantly higher speeds and reliability. Especially with the ENDC (E-UTRAN New Radio – Dual Connectivity) mode of operation, user equipment can connect to both 5G NR and 4G LTE networks as the backbone, increasing the adaptability of network operators and enabling faster 5G deployment. can also be expanded. However, smartphone makers must develop devices that can handle the myriad of frequency aggregations expected around the world. Therefore, 5G multi-carrier and application layer performance must be fully tested and verified from the research and development stage. New entrant Nothing Technology faced this challenge when developing its first 5G-enabled smartphone and turned to Rohde & Schwarz mobile device testing expertise to overcome it.
Rohde & Schwarz has supplied Nothing Technology with the new R&S CMX500 one-box tester, which combines flexibility and excellent performance in one instrument. This highly integrated test platform enables users to test 5G mobile devices and chipsets in all possible 5G NR network operating environments and spectrums, including FR1, FR2 and LTE spectrum bands. .
In addition, Nothing Technology was able to reduce test time and time to market for the Phone (1) by using the R&S CMsequencer integration wizard. The R&S CMsequencer can efficiently sweep the combination of user equipment FR1 bands/channels and supported frequency bands for throughput and VoLTE/VoNR measurements in each case. This allowed us to ensure that mobile devices behaved as expected under real world scenarios for each of the supported frequency band combinations. In addition, since its launch in July 2022, we have been able to realize the user-friendliness and performance of the device that users have come to expect.
Sam Lee, General Manager of Mobile Software for Taiwan at Nothing Technology, explains: “Validation in the development and design process is essential when developing new mobile products and cultivating emerging markets. The testers have been very helpful, allowing us to satisfy all global conformance requirements while also meeting performance requirements for a complete user experience.” Christoph Pointner, Senior Vice President Mobile Radio Testers at Rohde & Schwarz, said: “The automation approach with the R&S CMX500 One-Box Tester makes 5G testing easier than ever for newcomers as well as experienced engineers. We look forward to continuing our
cooperation with Nothing Technology in development and verification.” Learn more about the R&SCMX500 one-box signaling tester
