Warp Space Co., Ltd. Warpspace is developing “WarpHub InterSat”, a rapid response communication network service using light for artificial satellites orbiting in low earth orbit at 400 to 1,000 km above the ground. With conventional radio communications, it was difficult to quickly send large amounts of data to the ground. However, Warpspace’s relay satellite is planned to be located in a medium orbit where it is easy to establish communication with the ground, and this relay satellite can transmit and receive data with laser light. The received data is then immediately transmitted to the ground station. This makes it possible to acquire a large amount of satellite data for immediate disaster response and disaster prevention simulation. Mynaric’s “CONDOR Mk3” terminal, which was adopted this time, is scheduled to be used in the first three relay satellites of this optical relay network.
Mynaric’s CONDOR series of optical communication terminals are specifically designed for large-scale deployment as part of government and commercial satellite constellations. So far, the product has been used by the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) data transmission satellite constellation through Northrop Grumman, a major U.S. space development manufacturer, a commercial synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite by U.S. earth observation satellite operator Capella Space, and a Canadian satellite. It is used in the satellites of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) small satellite-related technology demonstration program “Blackjack” through the satellite communication company Telesat. In addition, Mynaric has been named a major development partner for Phase 1 of DARPA’s “Space-BACN” program to build a communications network for low-earth orbit satellites, and was awarded by the European Space Agency (ESA) to build a
next-generation high-throughput optical inter-satellite link. We are also entrusted with optical technology research projects.
This contract is Mynaric’s first contract with a Japanese company. Japan’s space industry is expected to grow from $9 billion today to more than $30 billion by 2050, according to a New Zealand Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade market report.
