The main character is Rieko-chan, a sweets-loving girl whose father is a chocolate maker. When you are lonely and fall asleep while answering alone, your favorite stuffed animals start to move. The stuffed toys are animals related to Ecuador, a famous production area of cacao in South America, such as sloths, toucans, and armadillos. It’s a slightly mysterious story about Rieko-chan and animals working together to create a magical gateau chocolate.

Chef Kenji Ujiie has always wanted to publish a picture book. One of the reasons for this was the growing disparity in education in Japan. Reading picture books is the first step toward developing language, expressiveness, and vocabulary. I wrote it with the hope that “Guru Guru Gateau Chocolat” will make you like books.
Even if you don’t have a sufficient educational environment, if you can read books filled with wisdom, you can open up your own future. This is a picture book filled with the author’s thoughts.
Profile of the author, Kenji Ujiie
Born in Tokyo in 1968. Founder and owner chef of Ken’s Cafe Tokyo. In 1998, he opened “Ken’s Cafe Tokyo” in front of Shinjuku Gyoen, Tokyo. Launched Japan’s first gateau chocolate specialty store. Since 2015, he has been supervising sweets for FamilyMart Co., Ltd., and is also in charge of the development of “Ecuador Special”, a chocolate using high-quality cacao beans from Ecuador. His publications include “The reason why gateau chocolat for 3,000 yen each sells like hot cakes: How to create a system that sells even if the price is raised four times” (SB Creative, 2014), “Stop doing unnecessary things! –A chef’s amazing way to achieve annual sales of 300 million yen with gateau chocolat alone” (Shueisha, 2018).
