JOGMEC
Held “first” seminar to widely publicize research results and intellectual property originating from JOGMEC

On February 22, 2023, JOGMEC (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Tetsuhiro Hosono) established the “JOGMEC New Technology and Results Dissemination Seminar” was held for the first time, and 7 themes of research results were presented.
JOGMEC proactively manages a series of R&D activities, from the basic research stage to the commercialization of R&D results by partners. We aim to achieve such things as strengthening the competitiveness of companies and JOGMEC.
This seminar, which was held for the first time mainly by JOGMEC, received much interest from many people, and nearly 200 people from companies, research institutes, universities, etc. registered to participate. On the day of the event, a lively question-and-answer session was held on each theme using the chat function of the online seminar.
JOGMEC aims to provide a stable and efficient supply of energy by supporting social implementation by partner companies and others by disseminating research results and intellectual property to society. If you are interested in the technical content of each theme, please contact the General Affairs Department Intellectual Property Promotion Section.

Details of each theme are as follows.
Theme 1: Method for recovering minerals containing valuable metals from copper tailings
Tatsuhiro Ono (JOGMEC Metal Resources Technology Laboratory) JOGMEC has started joint research with the Queensland State Government and others on technology for recovering cobalt from waste rocks from copper mines. Along with this, we invented a method for recovering minerals containing valuable metals from copper tailings (Note). (Note) Tailing is the residue remaining after recovering useful minerals from ore in the beneficiation process.
Theme 2: Molten metal treatment equipment, molten metal treatment method Takuya Yamamoto (Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University)
JOGMEC and Tohoku University conducted joint research on “Technology for rendering aluminum impurities harmless by hydrodynamic
cavitation.”
Theme 3: Detention sign detection method and system
Asaya Inoue (Senior Researcher, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology)
JOGMEC, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), and the University of Tokyo have jointly submitted an application for an algorithm to predict troubles such as detention during drilling.
Theme 4: Mine Wastewater Passive Treatment System
Kouya Hamai (Executive Investigator, Metal Environment Division) JOGMEC conducted research and development of “passive treatment”, a mine drainage treatment technology that utilizes the power of nature, and devised the “JOGMEC process” that removes harmful elements using rice bran, rice husks, etc.
Theme 5: Efficient method of purging hydrocarbons from adsorbents Daiki Sugawara (Deputy Manager, Engineering Section, Environment, Safety and Engineering Department)
JOGMEC has been conducting research on LPG storage and management at national oil and gas stockpiling bases, and has filed a patent application in the process of analyzing and evaluating the data obtained.
Theme 6: Biorecovery of rare metals such as cobalt, nickel, manganese, and platinum
Yasuhiro Konishi (Visiting Researcher, Graduate School of Science, Osaka Public University; Professor Emeritus, Osaka Prefecture University)
We conducted joint research with Osaka Prefecture University on the leaching and recovery of useful metals from mineral resources using bacteria, and filed a joint application for the results.
Theme 7: Treatment method of water-soluble organic matter containing produced water using nanosecond pulse discharge plasma
Takao Namihira (Associate Professor, Institute of Industrial Nanomaterials, Kumamoto University)
We jointly conducted research with Kumamoto University on the treatment of heavy metals and other substances contained in produced water.
Lecture materials and lecture videos will be posted on the JOGMEC event page below at a later date.
