Fukuyama Castle was built in 1622 by Katsunari Mizuno, the cousin of Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first lord of the domain, as a base for the Saigoku Guard, and celebrated its 400th anniversary last year. The castle is known as the largest castle in the early modern period, with a five-layer, five-story (one basement floor) keep and dozens of turrets on a vast site of about 80,000 tsubo. In 1931 (Showa 6), the castle tower was designated as a national treasure, and in 1933 (Showa 8), the Fushimi yagura (turret), Oyudono, and Sukitetsu Gomon were designated as national treasures. Many cultural properties were destroyed by fire. Afterwards, as the city continued to recover, in 1966, as a project to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the city, donations from citizens at the time were used to rebuild the castle tower, Tsukimi Yagura, and Oyudono. It is now a symbol of Fukuyama City along with the muscle iron gate and bell tower. Last year, which marked the 400th anniversary of its
construction, the castle underwent a large-scale renovation by Fukuyama City, and is attracting attention again as a new tourist spot.
