– “Horizontal swing embroidery” characterized by beauty like a painting The beautiful embroidery on the back that makes this sukajan unique is one of the traditional textile-related industries rooted in Kiryu City, which has long prospered as a textile town in the Tomo region of Gunma, where the arena was born. Above all, Kiryu boasts the nation’s leading production of side-swinging embroidery. By using a special sewing machine called a “horizontal sewing machine” that moves the needle not only up and down, but also left and right, the threads are layered to create a unique shade of color and a three-dimensional effect, making it look as beautiful as a painting. It is characterized by creating patterns. The sukajan with its unique embroidery made this technique famous.
●“Crane” and “Thunders” sewn by Kiyomi Osawa, a “contemporary master craftsman” from Kiryu City
This limited sukajan is a special specification in which the team’s symbolic “crane” and “thunder” (thunders), as well as Gunma’s symbol Jomo Sanzan, are embroidered sideways. To commemorate the opening of Japan’s top level arena, we asked Kiyomi Osawa, an embroidery artist who was selected as a “Contemporary Master Craftsman”, to create a sukajan. Mr. Osawa is known as the “god of embroidery” and is a leading expert in side-swing embroidery. While moving the material with his hands, Mr. Osawa steps on the pedal of the horizontal swing sewing machine, and at the same time moves the lever with his knee to move the needle up and down, left and right, and carefully sews the material. The process looks like a painting, with the needle as a brush and the cloth as a canvas. Mr. Osawa has a unique commitment to expressing animals vividly, and with the exquisite color shading, even the texture of the crane’s wings looks like the real thing.

●Most of the production processes are handled by companies in Gunma Prefecture. Horizontal swing embroidery has become a rare technique as the number of craftsmen has decreased in modern times when sewing machines using computers have become widespread. Mr. Osawa’s desire to pass on this technique and traditional crafts to the next generation, and the desire of “CRANE THUNDES ONGAESHI” to support the local people and culture are included in the special sukajan. In addition to the embroidery by Mr. Osawa, most of the production processes, such as weaving, cutting, and sewing, are also done by companies in Gunma Prefecture.
●The entire amount after deducting costs from sales goes to social responsibility activities through CRANE THUNDERS ONGAESHI
The material is 100% pure silk, and there are five colors available: shrimp, red kite, velvet, blue indigo, and jet black. First place. The price is 880,000 yen (tax included), and the entire amount after deducting costs such as production costs from sales will be used for social responsibility activities through CRANE THUNDERS ONGAESHI. Delivery to customers is scheduled from the end of April to the middle of May. A beautiful pattern that symbolizes the team name is sewn into the back using traditional techniques from Gunma Prefecture. ● Production episode
It took about half a year from when I asked Mr. Osawa to make this embroidery until he accepted. At first, the pattern I requested to embroider was quite simple, just the character and logo of Gunma Crane Thunders. When Mr. Osawa saw this, he refused, saying, “If it’s a pattern that can be machine-embroidered, there’s no need for me to do it.” After that, we had many meetings, and he accepted our desire to make something special, in line with CRANE THUNDERS ONGAESHI’s philosophy of supporting local people and culture. It is now possible. After about a year of trial and error, we were finally able to sell it.

About the regional co-creation business of Open House Group Co., Ltd. In order to leave a prosperous Japan to the next generation, the Open House Group will address Japan’s social issues such as “population decline, declining birthrate and aging population”, “concentration of population in cities and decline of rural areas”, “aging of social capital”, As one of the solutions to “long-term economic stagnation”, “low labor productivity”, etc., we advocate “regional co-creation” and aim to realize a sustainable society by working hand in hand with various stakeholders. . There is a circulation of towns, people, and jobs, and compared to the city center where funds can be collected and houses can be sold, the circulation is weakened in rural areas.
