Alsace and the Loire are extreme regions.
Alsace is controlled by a very simple system of designations of origin, but too many grand crus, global warming and various exceptions add depth. Riesling and Gewürztraminer are often prominent regions, but Pinot Gris and Muscat, for which Alsace is the world’s premier producer of that variety, are also spectacular. The revived mixed brewing culture also produces many excellent wines.
On the other hand, the Loire is a very special production area in the world where a wide variety of varieties are strictly regulated by fine AOC. It doesn’t make much sense to memorize all of them, but once you have a solid understanding of the important AOCs, you’ll realize the incredible variety packed into one source.
Knowing the Loire can be said to be the gateway to advanced French wines. In addition, Jura and Savoie are production areas that tend to be lumped together, but the local varieties and terroirs are different, and each makes very distinctive wines.
We will learn how to properly use them, including comparison with the Burgundy region (especially the Jura), which has a somewhat similar climate and varietal composition.
