Data science using medical information big data revealed that concomitant use of immune checkpoint inhibitors and thiazide diuretics increases the risk of myocarditis.
It was found that the concomitant use of immune checkpoint inhibitors and thiazide diuretics caused myocarditis even after excluding other factors (age, sex, concomitant use of other diuretics, etc.). . Diuretics play an important role in the treatment of cardiovascular events, and progress in research on the risk of side effects of each drug is expected to lead to the clarification of the optimal drug therapy for myocarditis.
◆Overview
Lecturer Hiroaki Hamano and Professor Yoshihito Zamami of the Department of Pharmacy, Okayama University Hospital, National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City; President: Yasutomo Nasu), Satoru Mihoshi of the joint research group Shimoetsu Hospital (Akiba-ku, Niigata City) Pharmacist, Assistant Professor Aya F. Ozaki and Professor Pranav Patel of the University of California, Irvine, Professor Keisuke Ishizawa of the Department of Pharmacy, Tokushima University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University ), Associate Professor Toshihiro Koyama of Nagoya University Graduate School of Informatics, Professor Yoshihiro Yamanishi of the Department of Bioinformatics, Graduate School of Informatics, Nagoya University, and Director Yasunari Isada of the Department of Pharmacology, National Institute of Health Sciences. revealed risk factors for myocarditis induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors.
In particular, it was found that the combined use of immune checkpoint inhibitors and thiazide diuretics increases the risk of developing myocarditis.
These drugs play an important role in the treatment of cardiovascular events, and research on the risk of side effects of individual drugs is expected to lead to the selection of the optimal drug therapy for myocarditis. I’m here. These research results may contribute to the selection of the optimal drug treatment according to the individual patient’s condition, that is, the promotion of individualization of drug treatment.
The results of this research were published as an online version in the International Journal of Cancer, an international medical journal for cancer research, on June 12, 2023.

Through data science research using medical information big data, we believe that we have contributed to the development of treatment strategies for the latest pharmacotherapy, which is currently attracting attention. This research is the result of joint research realized through cooperation with domestic and foreign researchers. We will continue to build evidence that is useful to the world and provide safe medical care to patients.
