Announcing the results of a demonstration experiment on the CO2 reduction effect of Furutech’s “e-media door”
Helping achieve SDGs with image analysis AI and automatic door control ……
Furutech Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Sapporo, President and CEO: Shigeyuki Furuno, Tokyo Stock Exchange Standard: Stock Code: 6546) is conducting a demonstration project in a commercial facility using the e-media door by Professor Takashi Sakai of the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Technology, Meiji University. In “Experimental Results and Research on CO2 Reduction Effect by Opening Width Control,” we announced that the image analysis AI and automatic door control functions of “eMedia Door” suppressed air conditioning loss and demonstrated the CO2 reduction effect.

Background of the demonstration experiment
In January 2022, our company partnered with NEC Solution Innovator Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Koto-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director, President and CEO: Chikara Ishii, hereinafter referred to as NEC Solution Innovator) to use AI to analyze people’s movements from camera images and open doors. We jointly developed an “e-media door” that opens only when someone is passing through and controls the opening width depending on the direction they are coming from. In order to verify the effectiveness, we utilized the business matching advisory function provided by Mizuho Bank to search for a verification partner for this solution. As a result, we received a proposal and introduction about collaboration with Meiji University Professor Sakai, which led to the realization of this research.
Demonstration experiment results
Cameras were installed in actual commercial facilities to record traffic lines, and the effectiveness of reducing the total opening area using AI-based image analysis and automatic door control was measured. As a result, it was demonstrated that one automatic door can reduce the electricity required for air conditioning in a building by 9.2% (1,495.0kWh) per year, and reduce CO2 emissions by 659.3kg. This is a power saving of 40,300 yen per year, which is equivalent to the amount of CO2 absorbed by 74 cedar trees.

The above research results have also been submitted to the
Architectural Institute of Japan.

1. Environmental load reduction
“e-Media Door” is equipped with a camera on the automatic door device, uses AI to analyze the direction in which people are moving from the camera image, and controls the opening/closing and opening width of the door. This reduces air conditioning loss and contributes to CO2 reduction. It also helps prevent insect infestation in areas where food is handled.

・If you are heading through an automatic door, open it.
・If you just cross the front of the automatic door, it will not open. ・When passing by one person, limit the opening width and do not fully open. Since this function can be expected to reduce CO2, it is an initiative that leads to the SDGs “Take concrete measures against climate change.”

AI analyzes not only the movement of people, but also images of objects such as wheelchairs, and changes the opening/closing timing, speed, and opening holding time to suit the user. (Patent pending) For example, extend the open hold time if you are slowly heading towards the door. On the other hand, if someone rushes into the door, the opening timing is advanced to prevent contact with the door. The ability to ensure the safety of automatic doors tailored to each user is an initiative that will help support the SDGs of “creating livable cities.”

With the e-media door, we will reduce wasteful opening of automatic doors, reduce air conditioning loss by optimizing the opening width, and contribute to carbon net zero. In the future, we will use AI to further improve user identification technology and object recognition accuracy, aiming to create even safer automatic doors that take each user into consideration. In addition, we will pursue the transmission and reception of information that takes advantage of the value of automatic door installation locations.
Furthermore, based on the AI-based image analysis + automatic door platform jointly developed with NEC Solution Innovators, we aim to create new value. We will also work on GX (Green Transformation) to prevent this.
