MTI Co., Ltd.
MTI has been selected as a contractor for the Meteorological Research Institute! Research and development of a weather information app for general users that can also predict tornado paths
……
MTI Co., Ltd. (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as the “Company”) has partnered with the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Meteorological Research Institute (Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, hereinafter referred to as “The Company”) in the “Bridging Research and Development and Society 5.0 Program (BRIDGE)*” led by the Cabinet Office. The project was selected as a subcontractor by the
Meteorological Research Institute.
This year, we will introduce a tornado prediction system that has been developed for railway operators and airline operators so far in “Collaboration with startups to counter local and sudden severe weather: Building a real-time disaster prevention field using AI.” We will research and develop a weather information providing app that can also predict tornado paths for general users.

◆Background of R&D commission
Damage caused by tornadoes and other gusts of wind and localized heavy rain continues to occur both domestically and internationally, and various measures are required to prevent such atmospheric phenomena, which often occur locally and suddenly. Masu.
In research and development led by the Cabinet Office, the
Meteorological Research Institute has been using AI (artificial intelligence) since 2018 to improve the accuracy of predicting tornado paths and localized heavy rain. We have been developing systems that utilize data to support the safe operation of railways, aircraft, etc. Our company provides weather information services such as the guerrilla heavy rain detection app “3D Rain Cloud Watch” and the aviation weather system “ARVI”, and has the design rights to draw rain clouds in 3D so that users can intuitively detect danger. The company was selected as a subcontractor for the Meteorological Research Institute because it possesses the following and has a track record of related development in past initiatives.

◆About research and development in 2023

Image diagram of the application to be developed
Our company has been developing alert information generation systems and photography apps that combine detection and tracking information for tornadoes, gusts of wind, and localized heavy rain, traffic data, and the photographer’s perspective for railway and airline operators. I’m here. This year, by leveraging that know-how and combining an alert information generation system with GPS location information, we will conduct research and development on a weather information providing app for general users that can also predict the course of tornadoes.
This app notifies you in real time when a tornado occurs, and displays the location and predicted course of the tornado in 3D. Furthermore, if your current location or search point is within the predicted path, a warning notification will be sent, and you can check detailed information and wind speed images by clicking the tornado alert button.
In addition, with a view to future practical application, we will conduct a demonstration experiment to see if the app’s usefulness can help users feel threatened by tornadoes and take evasive action.
Implementation period: October 23, 2020 to March 29, 2020
*This commissioned research utilizes the budget of the Program for Bridging Research and Development and Society 5.0 (BRIDGE).
-About the guerrilla heavy rain detection app “3D Rain Cloud Watch”- [Image 2

Using observation data from the state-of-the-art weather radar “Phased Array Radar” and the Japan Meteorological Agency’s C-band weather radar, we display rain clouds across the country in 3D, predicting the possibility of guerrilla heavy rain occurring, which has been difficult to detect until now. This is a service that will notify you by push notification on your smartphone 20 minutes in advance. In addition, by providing information on lightning strikes and the possibility of hard-to-predict strong snow or heavy snow (standard values set by region), we aim to support countermeasures against sudden weather disasters and reduce damage.
