Announcement of the establishment of “TRE Holdings x Tohoku University WX (Waste Transformation) Co-creation Research Institute”
-Development of innovative processes for waste treatment and social implementation of CCU technology-
……
TRE Holdings Co., Ltd. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and COO Mitsuo Abe, hereinafter referred to as “TRE”) and National University Corporation Tohoku University (Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, President Hideo Ohno, hereinafter referred to as “Tohoku University”) On December 1, 2023, “TRE Holdings x Tohoku University WX (Waste We have opened the “WX Co-Creation Research Institute” (hereinafter referred to as the “WX Co-Creation Research Institute”) on the Tohoku University Aobayama Campus.
1. Background and purpose
In order to achieve carbon neutrality (hereinafter referred to as “CN”), research and development on CO2 capture, concentration, and utilization is underway around the world. Among these, the CCU process, which is attracting attention, consumes a large amount of energy during the process, which is a high barrier to its practical application.
In order to break down the barriers to practical application of the CCU process, Tohoku University has proposed an energy-saving CCU process that has been adopted by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) as part of its Moonshot R&D project. Innovation (technological innovation) for future society, such as being selected as one of the research and development projects aiming to achieve Goal 4 “Realize sustainable resource circulation for global environmental regeneration by 2050”. is leading the way. Based on our corporate philosophy of “contributing to the conservation of the earth’s environment,” TRE is actively working on new
businesses, research and development, and collaboration with other industries to realize CN. In addition, we have been quick to take on the challenge of making effective use of limited resources, such as manufacturing products from recyclable waste and dust generated during processing, and generating wood biomass power using wood from thinnings as fuel.
2. This initiative
Therefore, TRE and Tohoku University have opened the “WX Co-Creation Research Institute” and started the project in earnest, with the aim of developing an innovative process that integrates waste incineration and CO2 capture and utilization, and socially implementing CCU technology. did. WX is a coined word derived from Waste
Transformation, which aims to qualitatively change waste processing through the social implementation of waste recycling technology, and is a term that is derived from the word Waste Transformation, which aims to achieve a qualitative change in waste processing through the social implementation of waste recycling technology. This represents our aim to enrich society without being bound by existing frameworks. First of all, we will proceed with technological development with the aim of verifying the established theory. At the same time, we will contribute to the realization of a circular economy by discovering new themes that contribute to resource circulation and social
contribution, promoting the formation of projects, and developing young human resources who will be responsible for WX.
■About Tohoku University
Since its founding in 1907, the school has had the mission of “contributing to the realization of a peaceful and just human society through world-class research, training of leaders, and collaboration with diverse partners in society.” As one of Japan’s leading comprehensive research universities, it has produced many talented individuals and delivered outstanding research results to the world. In addition, in order to be certified as an International University of Excellence*3, we have established three commitments: “Creating social value that transforms the future (Impact),” “Developing diverse talents and opening up the future (Talent),” and “Innovating and taking on challenges.” “Accelerating Governance (Change),” and our commitment to change and plans to strengthen our system have been evaluated, and we have been selected as a candidate for certification as an International University of Excellence.
