Single Mothers Sisterhood (Kunitachi City, Tokyo, Representative Director: Mako Yoshioka), an NPO that supports the physical and mental health of single mothers through self-care courses for single mothers, is participating in the nationwide movement “Giving December”. As an ambassador organization for “, we started the “Donation Month Campaign” on December 1, 2023. Volunteer single mothers will form a team, produce and present an essay, and call for donations to support the support activities. The campaign runs until December 31, 2023. ■Writing an essay on the theme of “My Career”
The poverty rate for single mothers in Japan is particularly high compared to other developed countries, and the reason for this is the fact that, although the employment rate is high at 80%, a large proportion of mothers are employed in non-regular employment, and they are not given opportunities to build their careers. has been pointed out. In this campaign, eight single mothers will write essays on the theme of “career” and work with eight proofreaders to finalize and present the essays. We visualize the brilliance and value that lies in each individual’s individuality and accumulated experience, which cannot be seen just by the attribute of “single mother”.

■Self-recovery program through expression
Writing essays for single mothers leads to “healing the past, living in the present, and creating the future.” In the process of completing an essay, it is an activity that redefines an experience that was perceived as negative as something meaningful. The process of writing this essay itself is a form of empowerment.

■From beneficiaries to expressors and supporters
Additionally, this campaign is an opportunity for single mothers, who are usually the recipients of donations, to take on the role of collecting donations and experience a paradigm shift from being “beneficiaries” to “supporters” and “expressors.” . At the support site, we also place emphasis on ensuring that the roles of supporters and those receiving support are not fixed.

■Usage of donations
The donations raised through the campaign will be used to cover the operating costs of a self-care course for single mothers and a self-recovery program through expression. The four pillars of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare’s single parent support measures (1. Childcare and daily life support, 2. Employment support, 3. Support for securing childcare expenses, and 4. Financial support) do not include preventive health support. The physical and mental health of single mothers is essential not only for themselves but also for their children. While supporting the mental and physical health of single mothers, we will continue to raise awareness of the necessity of this.
