“Book stories” by authors of nature books are popular at Takatsuki City Natural Museum
On December 9th, Shintaro Seki, a nature photographer who works on illustrated books, will explain about the giant salamander.
……
At Akuapia Akutagawa (Takatsuki City Museum of Nature), in order to get people more deeply interested in the nature and living things around them, we are holding a series called “Nature and Books,” in which authors of books with the theme of nature and living things are invited as instructors to give talks. The Museum is held regularly and is always popular. The next speaker on December 9th will be Shintaro Seki, who specializes in amphibians, reptiles and fish, and has created many illustrated encyclopedias. The theme of the event will be “What kind of creature is a giant salamander?”

This project invites authors of books with the theme of nature and living things as lecturers, and listens to talks that delve deeper into the content of the books. So far, the participants have been listening to Mr. Takashi Oda, who creates restoration pictures for dinosaur picture books, about how dinosaurs will be recreated using a method called restoration based on excavated dinosaur skeletons. A number of instructors gave lessons, including adding flesh to a picture of a skeleton and actually observing spiders outdoors after a talk by Kensuke Nakata, author of the book “Spider Thread” and who has appeared in the media. An attractive plan has been developed. In addition to listening to lectures by lecturers, we also held workshops, including stuffed birds and insect specimens on display throughout the floor of Akua Pia Akutagawa, the venue, and the upstream, middle, and upper reaches of the Akutagawa River, which connects the city’s northern mountains to the Yodogawa River. The appeal of this project is that you can actually tour a diorama aquarium that is 6 meters wide and 1.1 meters high, and is designed to resemble the downstream environment.
On Saturday, December 9, Mr. Seki, a nature photographer who serves as the deputy director of the Kyoto Aquarium, runs the small aquarium “Biwako Base” in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, and has created numerous illustrated encyclopedias specializing in amphibians, reptiles, and fish. Mr. Shintaro will be invited as a lecturer, and he will talk mainly about the ecology and conservation activities of the giant salamander, which is a special natural monument displayed in the museum, and the story of when it was photographed.
