Chuko Shinsho is often seen as an academic label that deals with difficult topics, but “Uncovering Japanese History” is designed to be read like an essay, with approximately 3 pages each covering 61 themes. There is a story behind history. By deciphering ancient documents one by one, you will discover surprising facts that cannot be mentioned in the “history table” written in textbooks. The reason why Akechi Mitsuhide was able to deceive Oda Nobunaga, the whereabouts of Nobunaga’s body, the background behind the unpopularity of beetles in Edo, the tragic way a ninja died, the strange ritual performed by the Ako Ronin on the “head of Kira”, leaked information. Emperor Komei’s hospital bed records… This is a book filled with the “behind the scenes” of history during the Sengoku period, Edo period, and the end of the Edo period, created by an author who continues to grapple with dusty old documents.
