Mayu Hotta, who stars in the movie “Baka-nuri no Musume”, which will be released nationwide from September 2023, won the Best Newcomer Award at the 45th Yokohama Film Festival.
This work, “Baka-nuri no Musume” is a story about the bond between a father and daughter and the story of a family based on the theme of Aomori’s traditional craft, Tsugaru-nuri. The word “baka-nuri” in the title refers to Tsugaru lacquerware, which involves 48 steps to completion. “Repeat. Mayu Hotta played the role of Miyako, a daughter who aspires to become a Tsugaru lacquerware craftsman, and was highly praised for her graceful portrayal of a life-sized woman who is worried about her family, anxiety about the future, and a faint feeling of love.

The director is Keiko Tsuruoka, who received high acclaim at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival for her first feature film, “Whale Town,” and also directed the film adaptation of Kanako Nishi’s novel “Makuko.”
Just as lacquer is carefully applied over and over again, this work carefully depicts the process of completing Tsugaru lacquer, cut by cut. The film not only focuses on the charm of Tsugaru lacquerware, but also takes a serious look at the social background of traditional Japanese crafts, and makes you feel a sense of respect for
“manufacturing.”
This film will be screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival, CAMERA JAPAN, KINOTAYO Japanese Film Festival, and Japan Serbian Film Festival, and will also be released on Blu-ray and DVD on February 28th.
