-Key points of presentation-
Although special nursing homes are required to have a doctor, in many cases they are not on duty full-time, and nurses are the main source of medical care.
This research aims to reduce emergency visits and reduce medical resources by deploying nurse practitioners (NPs) who can coordinate and collaborate with other professions such as doctors and pharmacists and autonomously perform medical treatment at a certain level. It was recognized that it contributes to the proper use of medical equipment and is effective in suppressing increases in medical costs.
This study’s evaluation of the economic effects and role of clinical nurse assignments is expected to indicate the future direction of care in elderly care facilities and have a significant impact on policy formulation and nursing care facility management.

◆Overview: National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu) The research group of Professor Nahoko Harada of the Department of Health System Integrative Science, Faculty of Academic Research, is led by Professor Miho Suzuki of the Keio University School of Nursing and Medical Care. , National Hospital Organization Nagasaki Medical Center, Social Welfare Corporation Fukujunomori, and Tohoku Bunka Gakuen University will conduct a retrospective survey at special nursing homes in Miyagi Prefecture from October 2019 to September 2022. . By assigning clinical nurses, improvements such as a reduction in emergency consultations, appropriate use of medical resources, and control of increases in medical costs were observed, demonstrating the importance of clinical nurses in special nursing homes.
The results of this research were published online in the American magazine “The Journal for Nurse Practitioners” on November 29, 2023. A clinical nurse is a nurse who has completed medical knowledge and practice related to primary medical care. Clinical nurses are not only able to perform more invasive procedures than traditional nurses, but they also receive specialized education on basic knowledge of diseases and treatment details so that they can see the patient as a whole. It is possible to grasp the patient’s condition in a timely manner, perform tests and treatments, and provide appropriate explanations. ◆A word from Professor Naoko Harada
I feel that my efforts to study abroad with the aim of becoming a NP in the United States have finally paid off. At the award ceremony at the 9th Japanese National Research Society Academic Conference, our co-researchers gathered together to share their joy.
